In the 30th round of the EuroLeague, Panathinaikos narrowly avoided a shocking defeat against Alba Berlin, the last-placed team in the standings, securing a hard-fought 91:81 victory.
Ergin Ataman’s squad now holds a 19-11 record, while the German side remains at just five wins after 30 games, firmly anchored at the bottom of the table.
Apart from the massive 21:0 run that turned the game around in the final quarter, Ataman’s biggest concern was the injury to Cedi Osman, who left the game after just four minutes and did not return. The severity of his injury remains unknown.
The Athens-based “Greens” appeared to be in full control at halftime, leading 46:35. However, the momentum shifted in the third quarter, as Alba Berlin outscored Panathinaikos 29:20, shooting an impressive 5/7 from three-point range, with Matt Thomas hitting all three of his attempts. What was once a 13-point lead for Panathinaikos dwindled to just 66:64 heading into the final quarter.
Alba Berlin then opened the fourth quarter with a 13:3 run, while Panathinaikos struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 2/16 at that point, compared to Alba’s 11/26. With five minutes left, the visitors led 77:69, but Panathinaikos responded with a 10-0 run in under two minutes, prompting a timeout at 78:77.
The hosts extended their run to 19:0 after key baskets from Wenyen Gabriel and Jerian Grant, suddenly reclaiming a double-digit lead at 88:77. The decisive stretch sealed the victory for Panathinaikos, who ultimately pushed their run to 21:0 before Alba managed to score from the free-throw line in the closing moments.
Jerian Grant led the winning side with 19 points, followed by Kendrick Nunn with 18 and Wenyen Gabriel with 13. Matt Thomas was the top scorer for Alba Berlin with 14 points.
