Bosna is in advanced talks to pull off a shock EuroCup return, for the first time since 2007/2008 season, taking advantage of a financial crisis that threatens to push Monaco out of the competition, according to Basketball Sphere sources.
Bosna underwent major changes this summer, most notably with the departure of Dubravko Barbaric from the club, while Nihad Selimovic became the new president of the Sarajevo club’s Board.
Following a highly successful season in which the club won the double crown, all players left the team, and the collaboration with coach Muhamed Pasalic was not continued either, leading to Dario Gjergja taking his place.
It took a long time for the first player signing to happen, which rightly worried the fans. Eventually, the club canceled its participation in FIBA competitions and registered to compete in the Bosnia and Herzegovina Premier League from the very beginning, while its application for the ABA League was also full of obstacles.
Monaco’s crisis
However, major changes have occurred in recent days, all driven by the financial situation – or rather, disaster – that struck Monaco. The club from the Principality is in very bad shape, and it remains uncertain whether anyone will manage to take it over.
Recently, their license to compete in LNB Pro A was denied, and their subsequent appeal was also rejected. They could very easily say goodbye to the EuroCup as well, where a potential replacement is already being prepared in case Monaco fails to secure the necessary funds to keep the club operational.
Seizing the opportunity
According to our sources, Bosna is trying to take advantage of this opportunity and replace Monaco as the team slated to compete in EuroCup.
This could bring about major changes regarding the roster. According to our information, there is a strong chance that the players signed so far would not be part of the starting five, and the club would work on acquisitions with richer resumes. Naturally, the prerequisite for this would be Bosna securing the spot that currently belongs to Monaco.
According to Basketball Sphere’s information, a decision should be made in the coming days.
