Asvel have officially addressed the financial situation surrounding the club, confirming that delays in negotiations with potential investors have affected their plans ahead of the new EuroLeague season.
The Villeurbanne-based club entered the summer with ambitious goals and announced plans for one of the biggest projects in European basketball. Owner and new head coach Tony Parker previously revealed that Asvel were preparing a record budget of around €59 million, which would have represented a historic step forward for the French club.
However, the situation has changed significantly in recent weeks.
Unable to finalize agreements with investors within the expected timeframe, Asvel have been forced to reconsider their short-term plans, particularly regarding the team’s salary structure.

Asvel official statement on financial situation
Asvel explained that the club has been working for several months on a major project, but that delays in completing agreements with investors have affected the construction of the budget for the upcoming season.
The full statement from the club reads:
“For several years, and particularly in recent months, we have been working on an ambitious project for Asvel. We had reached very advanced discussions that allowed us to hope for the construction of a 2026/27 budget that would match our ambitions. Unfortunately, the discussions and agreements are taking longer than expected to be finalized, and this will have an immediate impact on our salary budget at the start of the season.
This is a difficult stage that we are going through, but I would like to reiterate our ambitions on both the domestic and European fronts. This delay does not call our project into question; it is simply another step in its development.
Some investors, who had already confirmed their intention to join us, have reaffirmed their confidence in the project. This process takes time, and we are working to establish their involvement and collaboration with us, while continuing to pursue our objectives as part of the club’s development.”
Tony Parker’s ambitious Asvel project faces first challenge
The financial situation represents the first major obstacle for Tony Parker’s plans in Villeurbanne.
The Asvel owner and head coach wanted to create one of the most ambitious projects in European basketball, with a significantly increased budget and a roster capable of competing at the highest EuroLeague level.
The initial plan included several major additions, with Asvel bringing in names such as Sylvain Francisco, Armoni Brooks and Nick Weiler-Babb.
However, the delay in securing the expected financial backing has changed the situation.
Sylvain Francisco departure opened new questions
One of the first consequences of the uncertainty was the departure of Sylvain Francisco.
The French guard had agreed to a three-year contract with Asvel and was presented as one of the leaders of the new project.
However, after the financial problems emerged, Francisco eventually joined Panathinaikos, who took advantage of the situation and secured one of the best available guards on the market.
His departure immediately raised questions about the future of other summer signings.
Asvel could face more roster changes
According to reports, Armoni Brooks and Nick Weiler-Babb could also explore their options if the club is unable to maintain the originally planned project.
Their potential departures would represent another difficult blow for Asvel, who hoped to enter a new era under Tony Parker.
For now, the club insists that the long-term project remains unchanged, but the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the final shape of the roster before the new EuroLeague season begins.
