Auckland Tuatara vs Manawatu Jets Preview
In the last couple of seasons, the Auckland Tuatara fielded some incredible rosters, but this year, they are stronger than ever. Like many teams in the New Zealand NBL, they opened their campaign slightly shorthanded but still had enough firepower to regularly notch routine victories. Once Isaac Davidson joined their squad after playing overseas along with Australian import Sean Bairstow, who came back from a small injury, the Tuatara started rolling and won nine straight games during late May, June and early July. Their amazing winning streak finally ended last Sunday, when they surprisingly lost at home against the Otago Nuggets (84:80). Even though they were without the services of Rob Loe and Chris Johnson in that clash, they still had more than enough quality and depth to win, but Otago played their best game of the season to stun the Tuatara at the Eventfinda Stadium. With only three matches remaining on their schedule, Auckland are currently sitting in second place in the standings – they need to keep winning to preserve their status in the top 2, which guarantees a direct berth in the playoff semi-final.
The hosts will certainly be without Chris Johnson today, while their other center Rob Loe is questionable due to a thumb injury, which has been an issue for him for years now. Auckland will be eager to redeem themselves in front of their fans for the unexpected loss against the Nuggets, but the Jets should be able to give them a run for their money.
If the Manawatu Jets had the Webster brothers along with three quality imports from the start of the season, then they would be one of the main title favourites. They already switched foreigners this year, while Corey and Tai Webster missed a lot of games and, as a result, the Jets are currently scrapping and clawing for the final playoff position. The Websters are finally playing regularly, so it comes as no surprise that Manawatu won their last two encounters. In the last seven days or so, the guests took care of business against the shorthanded Bay Hawks (97:88), while against the Nelson Giants, they had to endure a grueling double overtime, winning 120:113 following a huge effort. Those two wins were absolutely pivotal for the Jets to stay in contention for the playoffs. They are currently sitting within the playoff zone in sixth place in the standings with a 7-11 W-L record, but Nelson, Taranaki and Tauranga are right on their heels.
Manawatu have two games remaining in the regular season. Besides today´s clash in Auckland, they will also play the Franklin Bulls at home. Overall, the Jets are much better now compared to what they were showing when Corey Webster was still injured and his brother Tai was absent. They are two of the best guards in the country and when they are available, Manawatu can go toe-to-toe and play evenly against any team in the league.
Auckland Tuatara vs Manawatu Jets H2H
In the first head-to-head clash at the end of April, the Tuatara took advantage of the situation and easily beat the decimated Jets side 100:80 on the road.
Injuries and Suspensions
The Auckland Tuatara will be without Chris Johnson with Robert Loe questionable. The Manawatu Jets will have more or less a full squad available.
