Auckland Tuatara vs Otago Nuggets Preview
The mighty juggernaut squad of Auckland looks unstoppable this year and is poised to win its first ever title in history. The Tuatara are currently claiming the top of the standings with a strong 14-2 W-L record and also find themselves on an impressive nine-game winning streak. They last lost a match in mid-May against the vice-champions Southland on the road as that loss was necessary for them to figure things out under their head coach and legendary former player Cam Gliddon, who is orchestrating the team perfectly this season after he was forging in the fire in the last couple of seasons. He also played for the Tuatara, so many of the players he is currently coaching know him very well. That is a huge bonus to have along with the unprecedented quality Auckland possess – Isaac Davidson joined midseason after finishing his stint overseas, import Sean Bairstow returned after recovering from a slight injury, while the main heavyweights like the American import duo of Chris Johnson and Josh Dilling, domestic superstars Rob Loe, Tom Vodanovich and the new young sensation Zach Riley, were all present from the start of the season and have formed an incredible core that should give Auckland their first ever title after the Auckland Pirates won the league in 2012 (however the Pirates were not the same franchise as the Tuatara and are a completely separate team from the same city).
The hosts are seriously star-studded and have all the tools required to finally bring a trophy to the biggest city in New Zealand. Southland, Wellington and Canterbury are standing in their way, so it will be interesting to see how they react in the postseason against their main rivals. Overall, the Tuatara should have enough to reach the playoff final, but we think they will falter at the last hurdle against either Southland or Wellington.
Since we are in the dying embers of the regular season, the Otago Nuggets have massively improved their form and are playing with extra urgency to secure a playoff position. Currently, they are sitting in fifth place in the standings and look like a sure playoff lock, but they still have work to do with three extremely important matches left on their schedule. The team led by Craig Moller, Buay Tuach and Ethan Rusbatch recently beat the Airs twice, lost to the reigning champions Wellington by a single point at the buzzer at home and took care of business a couple of days ago on the road against the Franklin Bulls. All of this means that the Nuggets are in good form and, at first glance, they look like a value bet today on the road to cover the spread. They should be able to do that and make the game interesting, but there is always the possibility that Auckland run away with their superior class. However, the Tuatara will be without their main center Chris Johnson today, while their legendary veteran center Rob Loe is questionable. The potential absence of Loe would be a huge blow because Auckland wouldn´t have a real center, which opens up scoring opportunities for Otago in the paint.
If the hosts play without Rob Loe, the guests should comfortably stay within the given spread. If Loe does feature, then it will be close, but the guests should still cover because they are much better compared to what they were showing during May and early June.
