Barangay Ginebra San Miguel vs Phoenix Fuelmasters Preview
Fresh off their conquest of TNT in the Commissioner´s Cup playoff final, the Ginebra Kings are gearing up for another successful conference under the leadership of their legendary head coach and also the coach of the Filipino national team, Tim Cone. Ginebra look stacked and star-studded on paper, preserving their title-winning core from the Commissioner´s Cup with players like RJ Abarrientos, Japeth Aguilar, Scottie Thompson, Troy Rosario and Stephen Holt to name a few. The Gilas Pilipinas naturalized import player and the living basketball legend in the Philippines, Justin Brownlee, is unavailable because of the injuries he sustained during the Commissioner´s Cup and the last FIBA window, so coach Tim Cone and the Ginebra board had to find a solution. Their saviour is supposed the be the American forward with G-League experience, Riley Grigsby, who was personally scouted and recruited by Cone in the US. Grigsby is expected to make his debut today and provide the necessary import scoring punch for the powerhouse team of Ginebra. It will be very intriguing to see how the Ginebra Kings react with a completely new import after spending many years relying on the heroics of Brownlee. We have no doubt that their domestic core will instantly click with their new import because they are led by probably the best coach in the Philippines, who knows how to manage these kinds of situations.
Last time Ginebra lost against the Fuelmasters was way back in December 2023. Since then, the Kings have managed to overpower Phoenix in eight consecutive matches. The Fuelmasters have a flawless 2-0 W-L record so far and are breathing fire, but Ginebra should still be able to take care of business and win routinely because they possess superior quality and are much better coached.
The Phoenix Fuelmasters are enjoying a terrific Governors´ Cup start with a spotless 2-0 W-L record. They opened their campaign against the Magnolia Hotshots – it looked like they were going to lose heavily because they were down by 16 points in the first half, but they launched a massive comeback and managed to win that game by 12 points. This means there was almost a 30-point turnaround in that matchup, which is an impressive achievement for an average team like Phoenix. In their second match, the Fuelmasters got extremely lucky because they were facing an importless Meralco side. We expected them to breeze to victory, but they had massive issues and only managed to win by a single point after a dramatic ending. Still, a win is a win, but if they play today as they did against the Bolts, they will lose by double-digits against the powerhouse Ginebra squad. The Fuelmasters should be able to make the playoffs, but they will have to look for wins and points somewhere else and not against one of the main juggernauts of Filipino basketball.
Even though they had a terrific 2-0 W-L start, Phoenix are still an average team. They have a very good import in Robert Johnson and a couple of very potent domestic scorers, but they are simply not at the level of Ginebra. The only problem for the Ginebra Kings could be the fact that this is their opening game, but they should still come away victorious.
