Barcelona could be seeing some major changes in their coaching staff in the case that head coach Xavi Pascual heads to Dubai for next season.
The future of Barcelona’s coaching staff could spark a domino effect across European basketball. According to the Spanish outlet SUR, the Blaugrana club has identified Ibon Navarro as a potential successor should head coach Xavi Pascual decide to move to Dubai.
The Spanish newspaper outlines a chain of events involving multiple clubs: Dubai is reportedly pushing hard to secure Pascual, while Barca has reportedly set its sights on the current Unicaja coach, fresh from highly successful seasons at Malaga.
Unicaja was confident of extending Navarro’s contract with an improved financial offer, despite the current contract running until next year. However, in recent days, the club for Malaga has reportedly discovered that the coach enjoys high regard within the management of the Blaugrana club, a factor that has inevitably complicated the renewal negotiations.
There are other complications on the side of Barcelona, however. To release Navarro, Barcelona would have to pay a release clause estimated at around €300,000, an amount indicated as necessary to release him from his contract with Unicaja.
The situation is also closely tied to the Catalan club’s financial situation. According to SUR, Pascual had hoped for a more ambitious EuroLeague project, but Barcelona will continue to operate with similar financial constraints as in recent seasons, a factor that could impact his final decision.
If Pascual were to actually accept Dubai’s offer, Barcelona would be ready to immediately move forward with Navarro, leaving Unicaja in the position of having to search for a new coach at a crucial time for the club’s future planning.
