Bayern vs Partizan Preview
Like many teams this season, Bayern decided to change both their head coach and roster during the competitive year, and they are one of the few for whom those moves brought positive results. Gordon Herbert left the team, and Spencer Dinwiddie departed with him after failing to fully adapt to European basketball. Coach Svetislav Pesic arrived, and point guard Nenad Dimitrijevic was added to the roster from Zenit. Since those changes, Bayern have recorded three wins and two losses in five EuroLeague games and now stand at an 8-14 record, the same as Baskonia, with whom they share 15th place in the standings.
It is clear that with the departure of Carsen Edwards, Bayern lost one of the best scorers in the EuroLeague, but the team concept this season is completely different and they simply did not replace that level of individual quality in the transfer market. Perhaps the best confirmation of that is the fact that prior to coach Pesic arriving, Bayern had the least efficient offense in the EuroLeague. They also dealt with certain injury issues, but even now the changes in role distribution are starting to produce results. Before Pesic took over, Justinian Jessup never had a stretch of five games in which he played at least 20 minutes, but the Serbian coach found a role for him that allows him to contribute in a clear way. The best example was the game against Panathinaikos, when he scored 16 points on 4-of-4 shooting from three-point range and was one of the key players in Bayern’s win. According to defensive rating, Bayern allow their opponents 116 points per 100 possessions. Statistically, the team’s leading scorer is Andreas Obst with an average of 14.2 points per game, and he showcased his quality against Baskonia when he scored 37 points on 7-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc. On the season, he is shooting 40.3 percent from three-point range on 7.6 attempts per game.
Partizan are currently the worst team in the EuroLeague and, along with Anadolu Efes, are in by far the poorest form, having lost their last seven EuroLeague games. Their most recent win came against Crvena zvezda, when they erased a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but that was just a brief moment of brilliance. After that, losses followed against Virtus, Zalgiris, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Valencia, Monaco, Barcelona, and Olympiacos. They are currently 6-16 and sit at the very bottom of the standings together with the previously mentioned Efes and Asvel.
In their most recent game against Olympiacos, they suffered a shocking 38-point loss, which is the most lopsided home defeat in European competitions and the third-heaviest loss in the club’s European history. How poorly they look is further illustrated by the fact that less than a month ago they lost 109-68 against Zalgiris. Jabari Parker and Sterling Brown did not play in the game against Olympiacos. Coach Joan Penarroya, who replaced Zeljko Obradovic, arrived at a very difficult moment. The team does not look good, Cameron Payne and Tonye Jekiri were added later on, but the impression is that everything happened too late, when the season had already slipped away for Partizan, while Tyrique Jones left for Olympiacos. Duane Washington is averaging 15 points per game, but it can be said that he is the player with the best individual statistics on the worst team in the EuroLeague, as the vast majority of Partizan’s offense looks like forced individual solutions. That has been the case since the start of the season, more precisely since the injury to Carlik Jones, which in a way marked the beginning of everything going wrong for Partizan. When looking at net rating, the difference between offensive and defensive rating, Partizan are convincingly the worst team in the EuroLeague, making any further statistical discussion unnecessary.
