Besiktas vs Anadolu Efes Preview
Besiktas is having a truly impressive season, playing high-quality basketball on both fronts. The team, led from the bench by Dusan Alimpijevic, went more than a month without a loss. A month and three days passed between their two EuroCup defeats — they were beaten by Lietkabelis in early October, while a few days ago they lost to Buducnost in a rather strange game. As often happens, the referees were in the center of attention, and Alimpijevic was quite unhappy with the officiating in that match. It was the team’s second loss in six EuroCup games, while in the Turkish Super League, Besiktas has a record of six wins and no losses. In their most recent Super League game, they defeated Merkezefendi quite comfortably.
Under Dusan Alimpijevic, Besiktas has reached a very high level. The new head coach of the Serbian national team enjoys great trust from the club’s management, fans, and the players themselves, who are aware that they can significantly improve their game under his leadership. One of Besiktas’ main strengths this season has been their incredible three-point shooting — as a team, they shoot nearly 45%, while allowing their opponents only 28% from beyond the arc. With that kind of three-point accuracy, it’s logical that their offense ranks near the top — only Fenerbahce and Anadolu Efes have a better offensive rating, while today’s opponent is the only team with a better defensive rating. For several seasons now, Jonah Mathews has been the team’s leading scorer and a player in whom Alimpijevic has great confidence. Anthony Brown also makes a huge offensive contribution and enjoys a lot of freedom, as he has already proven capable of scoring 20+ points against any defense in the Turkish Super League.
Just like throughout the season, Anadolu Efes has been inconsistent in recent weeks and can’t seem to find the rhythm or continuity they need. It feels as if this team needs a few weeks of solid basketball to really click and realize they have the quality to compete with and beat any team in Europe. In their last eight games, they’ve split results evenly — four wins and four losses. In their most recent game, they lost in the EuroLeague to Milano after two overtimes, marking their sixth loss against only three wins. In the Turkish Super League, however, Anadolu Efes remains undefeated — just like today’s opponent.
Injuries are one of the main reasons why Anadolu Efes doesn’t look as strong as expected and why their results don’t match the quality of their roster. Their backcourt remains very strong, but their frontcourt has been problematic, mostly due to injuries — at one point, they had only three players available to cover the four and five positions. It’s not surprising that they rank among the top two teams in almost all key statistical categories — offensive rating, defensive rating, rebounding, and assisted points percentage. An important note is that head coach Igor Kokoskov often fields a mixed lineup in domestic league games, which is why Shane Larkin has played only one match, while players with limited EuroLeague minutes have been given more opportunities.
