Barcelona vs Tenerife Preview
Barcelona have generally not had a good season behind them. It is already clear that they are in a transitional period and that major changes await them in the summer, although they still have a chance to slightly improve the impression by potentially winning the Liga Endesa. In the Copa del Rey, they were eliminated in the semifinals by Baskonia, while in the EuroLeague they failed to reach the playoffs after losing to Monaco on the road in the play-in. In the domestic league as well, they finished the regular season in fifth place, so it did not look promising ahead of the playoffs.
It has also already been confirmed that Xavi Pascual will not lead the team next season. Although he arrived in Barcelona in November and was expected to be a long-term solution, that ultimately did not happen and he will leave the club at the end of the season. In the quarterfinals, Barcelona faced Murcia. Despite not having home-court advantage, they managed to record two wins and secure a place in the semifinals. What was interesting in that series is that all three games were won by the away teams, and Barcelona played excellently in the decisive third game, winning 100-76 on the road. Barcelona also had a bit of luck, as Murcia were without their by far best player of the season, David DeJulius. In that Game 3, the Catalan side already built a double-digit lead in the first quarter (27-17). As the game went on, the gap only increased, and their focus was evident from the fact that they won all four quarters. The most efficient player for Barcelona was Will Clyburn with 23 points, while Kevin Punter and Nicolas Laprovittola added 14 each, whose return to the court will be a huge boost for Barcelona in the final stretch of the season. In addition, Tornike Shengelia scored 12 points and Jan Vesely added 11. What is very important for Barcelona at the moment is that they are fully healthy and have no injury problems.
On the other side is Tenerife, a team that recently seemed to be in a downward spiral. They were in very poor form, and in the FIBA Champions League they were surprisingly beaten in the semifinals by Rytas, despite being heavy favorites. After that, they continued to struggle in the domestic league, finishing the regular season with six losses in their last seven games. That poor run meant that Tenerife ultimately finished only eighth in the standings with a record of 18 wins and 16 losses.
In the quarterfinals, they faced the toughest possible challenge – Real Madrid. Their chances were considered minimal, but they managed to pull off a major surprise and eliminate the two-time reigning champions. Even more impressively, they achieved both wins on the road. This becomes even more significant considering that Tenerife could not count on Giorgi Shermadini, one of their key players, due to recent heart-related issues. However, when it mattered most and the entire season was on the line, Tenerife delivered perhaps their best performance of the season, beating Real Madrid 107-95 away. Patty Mills played a historic game, scoring 29 points in just 19 minutes on the court. Marcelinho Huertas added 23 points, while Kevin Yebo also had a fantastic performance with 22 points. Yebo joined the club at the end of May as a playoff reinforcement after an excellent season with Chemnitz, and the move has proven to be a perfect one, as he has scored in double digits in all three games against Real Madrid. Combined, that trio scored 74 points in this game. In addition, Aaron Doornekamp also reached double figures with 12 points. If Tenerife manages to maintain this level of play in the series against Barcelona, there is no doubt they can also aim for a place in the final.
