Buducnost vs Crvena Zvezda Preview
Buducnost are once again playing a fantastic season and are clearly showing ambitions for a high finish in both competitions they are competing in. The Montenegrin side have won seven of their last eight games, and ten of their last twelve overall across the EuroCup and the ABA League. In the regional competition, they secured first place at the end of the group phase and currently hold a 13–2 record. In recent rounds, they have beaten strong teams such as Spartak (75–66) and Cedevita Olimpija (83–72) on the road, as well as Bosna at home (90–80). In the EuroCup, Buducnost have put together back-to-back wins, defeating Chemnitz in Podgorica (97–81) and Ulm on the road (103–90).
Buducnost delivered an excellent performance against a club that came close to winning the German title last season. They shot 68% from two-point range and an impressive 55% from beyond the arc, which explains the 103 points scored in that game. Yogi Ferrell (23 points, five assists) and Rasheed Sulaimon (22 points, four assists) were unstoppable for the visitors, while Juwan Morgan, Nikola Tanaskovic and Djordjije Jovanovic also reached double figures. This season, Buducnost boast a truly deep roster that does not depend on one or two players, allowing them to overcome absences such as Fletcher Magee, or weaker outings from Axel Bouteille and Jerry Boutsiele, which was the case in the previous two games. In the ABA League, as many as six Buducnost players are averaging between nine and 13.5 points per game, highlighting the overall quality of the squad. Buducnost are excellent from three-point range in the ABA League, shooting 40%, the best mark in the competition, while also ranking as the second-best defense. They have the fifth-best offense, but are the third-worst team from the free-throw line. However, their defense makes up for any offensive shortcomings. This was most evident in the clash with Spartak, when Buducnost played a rather poor first half and trailed by nine points. Over the next 20 minutes, they allowed just 18 points, holding their opponent to only five made field goals in that span. They now face a team with whom they have developed a fierce rivalry over the past decade, so a packed arena and strong home support should be expected.
Crvena Zvezda looked like one of the hottest teams in the EuroLeague heading into last week’s double round. In the first game of that stretch, the red-and-whites defeated Hapoel Tel Aviv 87–75 thanks to an excellent fourth quarter, but then suffered an 83–82 loss to Maccabi Tel Aviv. That defeat snapped Crvena Zvezda’s five-game winning streak in the EuroLeague, while in the ABA League they also suffered an unexpected loss to Mega last weekend, 107–102. Crvena Zvezda currently hold an 11–4 record in the regional league, and regardless of the outcome in Podgorica, they will remain in second place in their group.
Still, this game carries major importance ahead of the next phase of the competition, as all results are carried over. For that reason, it makes a big difference whether the red-and-whites advance with four or five losses, as well as whether they hold a 2–0 head-to-head advantage over Buducnost. Crvena Zvezda believe they can win this game and even claim the ABA League title without home-court advantage in the playoffs, as their EuroLeague performances have shown they are more than capable of doing so. They have beaten numerous high-profile opponents and have recently started putting together road wins as well. In addition, the injury situation is steadily improving for the Belgrade side, leaving the head coach with the pleasant dilemma of deciding which 12 players to include for the next game. Jordan Nwora is in outstanding form, scoring 23, 22, 22 and 22 points in his last four games. Alongside him, Jared Butler and Chima Moneke have also been excellent, while Ebuka Izundu has established himself as the primary option at the center position. However, Crvena zvezda were quite irresponsible on the defensive end last weekend, allowing Mega to score 107 points. In that game, the red-and-whites were without Jordan Nwora and Chima Moneke, with Donatas Motiejunas (22 points), Jared Butler (20 points), Ebuka Izundu (18 points, seven rebounds) and Yago dos Santos (17 points, eight assists) leading the way. Crvena Zvezda managed to erase a seven-point deficit heading into the final quarter against Hapoel Tel Aviv by going on a 14–0 run and not allowing a single point for nearly seven minutes of action in the decisive period. Still, they suffered an unexpected blow against Maccabi Tel Aviv, although even in that game they had a chance to win in a tight finish, with as many as three game-winning attempts.
