Germany, along with Turkey, is the only national team to reach the EuroBasket semifinals without a single loss. After dominant performances in the group stage, they faced difficulties for the first time in the round of 16. After pulling off a huge upset in the round of 16 by eliminating one of the main favorites for the gold medal – the Serbian national team – they entered the quarterfinals as favorites against Georgia and managed to live up to that role, winning comfortably 93-79.
Finland played a perfect first half, hitting as many as ten three-pointers and holding a huge 17-point lead at the break. Although their level of play dropped in the second half, the victory was never truly in doubt. Georgia closed in at one point to just six points behind, but when Finland repelled that push, there was no question about who would reach the semifinals. Interestingly, Lauri Markkanen scored 17 points but was not the most efficient player on his team, as Mikael Jantunen delivered an outstanding performance with 19 points. It’s also worth noting that Elias Valtonen once again played a key role in the crucial moments, similar to the game against Serbia. However, it’s clear that Finland will need an even better performance in the semifinals compared to the game against Georgia if they hope to reach the final.
