Olympiacos vs Real Madrid Preview
Throughout the entire season, Olympiacos were considered the main favorites to win the EuroLeague, and on Sunday they will have the opportunity to justify that status on the court. After sweeping Monaco 3-0 in the quarterfinal playoff series, Olympiacos delivered another dominant performance in the semifinals against Fenerbahce, sending the reigning European champions home with a convincing 79-61 victory. Georgios Bartzokas’ team looked so impressive that they are rightfully viewed as favorites heading into the championship game.
There are several reasons why it would come as a surprise if the team from Piraeus does not become European champions. During the current season, Olympiacos invested enormous financial resources and unquestionably assembled, at least on paper, the strongest roster on the continent. Their injury situation is also highly favorable, while their opponent is struggling with the absence of almost the entire frontcourt rotation. In addition, Olympiacos are playing in neighboring Athens, meaning they are expected to enjoy even greater support from the stands than they did in the semifinal, when the majority of the arena was already backing the red-and-whites from Piraeus. However, Olympiacos’ semifinal performance itself may be the clearest indication of how they can achieve such a major success. Georgios Bartzokas’ players stepped onto the floor extremely motivated and well-prepared, quickly building a significant advantage. Olympiacos did not allow a single point for seven full minutes, while Tyler Dorsey caught fire offensively on the other end, helping the Greek side establish a double-digit lead early. Olympiacos did not receive much contribution from Sasha Vezenkov in the first half, but it was not necessary because Alec Peters and Tyson Ward both delivered outstanding performances. Alec Peters played one of the best games of his career and finished as Olympiacos’ leading scorer with 17 points, while Sasha Vezenkov added 16 after exploding in the third quarter, where he scored 14 points alone. Olympiacos hurt Fenerbahce in multiple ways. Their defense was aggressive and intelligent enough to disrupt the opponent’s offensive organization, constantly creating nervousness in Fenerbahce’s play, which was reflected in the reigning champions’ shooting percentages. Led by Nikola Milutinov, who grabbed 13 rebounds, Olympiacos also dominated the battle on the boards. Considering Real Madrid’s injury problems at the center position, it would not be surprising to see the Greek side establish another huge rebounding advantage on Sunday.
Real Madrid, somewhat quietly and without much spotlight, managed to reach the EuroLeague final. During the regular season, they were known primarily as a dominant home team, winning 18 of their 19 games in Madrid, while struggling significantly on the road. However, the Spanish giants found their best form at exactly the right moment. They defeated Hapoel Tel Aviv 3-1 in the quarterfinals before overpowering Valencia 105-90 in the semifinal. Real Madrid will not enter the championship game as favorites, but perhaps that is exactly the role that suits them best.
Real Madrid looked phenomenal in the semifinal in Athens. Sergio Scariolo’s players won every quarter except the first, which they lost 28-26. Starting from the second period, Real Madrid took control of the game and never relinquished the lead. Their offense looked unstoppable — they scored 62 points in the first half and at one point shot 11-for-15 from three-point range — yet it still felt as though their halftime advantage of 62-56 was not large enough considering how well they had played. A response from Valencia, the biggest surprise of this EuroLeague season, was expected, but Real Madrid’s experienced roster was prepared for everything, including what initially appeared to be a serious injury to Usman Garuba. Mario Hezonja delivered one of his best individual performances of the season, finishing with 25 points, while Trey Lyles added 17. Gabriel Deck contributed 16 points and eight rebounds, Andres Feliz recorded 15 points and eight rebounds, Theo Maledon scored 12 points, and Facundo Campazzo added eight assists. Once again, Real Madrid demonstrated the depth and quality of their roster despite injuries to Walter Tavares and Alex Len. However, the challenge awaiting them in the final will be extremely difficult. With a depleted frontcourt, they will have to battle a team that is arguably the most powerful on paper in Europe. Real Madrid scored 105 points against the fourth-best defense in the EuroLeague during the semifinal, but now they must find answers against an Olympiacos defense that allowed only 61 points to Fenerbahce. Real Madrid will also have to deal with the overwhelming crowd support expected for Olympiacos, but there is no doubt that veteran head coach Sergio Scariolo will do everything possible to prepare his team properly. At the same time, Real Madrid’s players will be highly motivated to deliver the first EuroLeague title of Scariolo’s remarkable coaching career.
Olympiacos vs Real Madrid H2H
During the regular season, these two teams split their head-to-head meetings with a 1-1 record. Real Madrid won at home 89-77, while Olympiacos responded with a 102-88 victory on their own court. Last season, the two sides met in the EuroLeague quarterfinals, where Olympiacos advanced after winning the series 3-1.
Injuries and Suspensions
Olympiacos will be without Keenan Evans, Moustapha Fall, Frank Ntilikina, Monte Morris, and Giannoulis Larentzakis. Real Madrid, meanwhile, will be missing Walter Tavares, Alex Len, and Usman Garuba.
Where to Watch Olympiacos vs Real Madrid?
Olympiacos vs Real Madrid Best Betting Tip and Prediction
Olympiacos are by far the best team on the Old Continent at the moment and they demonstrated that in the semifinal against Fenerbahce. Real Madrid will also be without Usman Garuba in this game on top of the previously injured Walter Tavares and Alex Len, which practically means they are without all three centers. Trey Lyles will have to play heavy minutes at the five position and Olympiacos should be able to take advantage of that by establishing an easy edge in the low post and creating open three-point shots. Real Madrid will certainly switch to zone defense at certain points of the game, but it is hard to imagine that confusing a team as experienced as Olympiacos too much.
