Never in its history has Turkey managed to win a gold medal at a major tournament. Not once in their previous eight games at this tournament did Dennis Schroder and his teammates look truly threatened, as they were the dominant force every single time. Even when they were shooting 1/25 from three-point range at one point against Portugal, they still finished with a 27-point win. They also held off Luka Doncic’s surge by closing the fourth quarter calmly and now have only one more hurdle left before uniting the European and World crowns. Truth be told, Turkey will be by far the toughest opponent they have faced so far.
Against Finland, the usual suspects Schroder and Franz Wagner were the best. They combined for 48 points and solved one-on-one situations with ease. Tristan da Silva added 13 points and his form has been rising as the tournament progresses, potentially peaking in the final. Isaac Bonga locked down Lauri Markkanen after already showing good defensive moments against Doncic, while Daniel Theis remains the glue of this German team. He is the only true center on the roster, and at the same time, defensively switches and successfully guards all five positions one-on-one. For Germany to win this final, it will also be necessary for someone off the bench to get hot from beyond the arc, and that role usually belongs to Andreas Obst, who is unstoppable once he catches fire.
