The initial surprise and good form of the Blackwater Bossing have expectedly evaporated. We didn´t expect the Bossing to continue with their winning ways after defeating Rain or Shine and Magnolia in their opening two games because they lack the quality and depth. Basically, they only have three high-volume scorers in RK Ilagan, Sedrick Barefield and import Kentrell Barkley and that is not enough to sustain winning over long stretches in a very competitive Governors´ Cup. During the early stages, Blackwater outlasted a shorthanded Elasto Painters side and an out-of-form Hotshots, but when they faced better opposition in view of Meralco and Barangay Ginebra, they lost. Ginebra absolutely hammered them by thirty points, while today´s opponents beat them routinely last week 102:93 with Kentrell Barkley´s 36-point, 25-rebound performance going to waste. The Bossing only managed to keep that match close in the first half – they had no energy in the second half and their lack of depth on the bench was more than visible. With their current 2-3 W-L record, Blackwater desperately need to win today and exact revenge, but it will be very difficult because they are playing a better and more organized squad with more versatile offensive options.
Following the nine-point loss in the first head-to-head clash, the bookmakers will certainly give clear advantage to the Fuelmasters. Phoenix are the better outfit and have an excellent chance to win today and fortify themselves at the top of the standings. Despite their efforts, Blackwater are still a wild team and one of the weakest PBA franchises. The dust has settled after their initial victories and we expect them to continue losing today, which would extend their losing streak to four consecutive games.
The Phoenix Fuelmasters are not a top PBA team nor a title contender, but they are a very solid squad that should routinely make the playoffs. Phoenix´s main weapon has been their import Robert Johnson, who is receiving solid support from Jason Perkins and Ricci Rivero. Their newest acquisition from Rain or Shine, Gian Mamuyac, finally had a breakthrough performance in the win over Bossing with 18 points and has recently signed a new contract with the Fuelmasters. If we look at the rosters, the Fuelmasters hold a distinct edge over Blackwater and they are playing better. They also won the first head-to-head pretty easily, so anything but a routine victory this Wednesday for Phoenix would be a major shock for us.
At the moment, the Fuelmasters are cruising at the top of their group. We doubt they can actually finish the regular season at the top, but they should have more than enough to easily book a postseason berth. Teams like Blackwater shouldn´t give them too many issues, so today, we are expecting a resounding win for the Phoenix Fuelmasters.
