Buyukcekmece vs Tofas Preview
Many things have changed during the season in the Turkish Super League, but one constant remains, and that is that Buyukcekmece have been at the bottom of the standings since the start of the season. They recorded their first win only in December, while their second and so far last victory also came in that same month. Since then, the team has suffered six consecutive defeats. It is not encouraging that during that period they had a very difficult schedule, which makes survival now seem quite far away. There is still hope, but they must start winning games in streaks, and how realistic that is remains to be seen. After 19 rounds played, the team has only two wins and as many as 17 losses, and in the last round they were defeated by Bahcesehir.
Only in the first quarter were Buyukcekmece an equal opponent to Bahcesehir, as in the second quarter the home team pulled away and built a lead that Buyukcekmece could not overcome. It was their ninth road loss in as many games, and they are the only team in the league without an away victory. What is particularly worrying is the fact that they are not impressive even at home. When a team scores only 58 points in 40 minutes of basketball, there is not much to say about how they performed, especially with just 33 percent shooting for two points. In that game Alex Gavrilovic made his debut as the newest addition to the team, but urgent changes are necessary, because if they do not secure at least three wins in the next month, they can slowly start preparing for the second division.
Tofas are having a significantly worse season than last year, and it is now clear that they will not be able to repeat the success of finishing sixth in the standings. As things currently stand, the team will fight hard for a play in position, as after 19 games they hold a record of eight wins and 11 losses. They are currently on a four game losing streak, and looking at the bigger picture, they have won only once in their last eight games, which is unacceptable. During the week they played a game in the FIBA Champions League and lost to Alba in Berlin, which mathematically eliminated them from the Top 16 phase with two rounds remaining, allowing them to fully focus on the Turkish Super League.
Tofas opened the game against Alba Berlin very well, leading in the first quarter and even building an 11 point advantage in the second quarter, but they lost that lead by halftime and eventually suffered a fully deserved defeat. When you shoot 39 percent for two points and just over 16 percent for three points, while also being outrebounded by a double digit margin, it is practically impossible to win on the road. Poor results have led to a coaching change for this team, as Emil Rajakovic is no longer the head coach, and it remains to be seen who will replace him on the bench. Away performances are a particular issue for Tofas, as in ten domestic league road games they have only one win. Including games in the FIBA Champions League, the record is slightly better but still modest, with three wins in 16 away games. In the loss against Alba Berlin, Hugo Besson was the standout player with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while only Jordan Floyd also reached double figures. Marek Blazevic once again finished in single digits and delivered a weaker performance, and it seems that the drop in his form has significantly affected the teams results. If they fail to secure a road victory in this game, it raises the question of when they will be able to do so, as they are unlikely to have an easier task than this one.
