China vs Philippines Preview
China are the best team in this tournament and we think they should be able to show control and poise against the unpredictable Filipino side and win routinely thus securing the top of the group with a flawless 3-0 W-L record. They definitely have the quality for that as the Chinese team is playing with more or less their A selection with a couple of notable absentees like Yang Hansen and Zhao Jiwei, but they still possess excellent quality and experience with players like Hu Jinqiu, Liao Sanning, Hu Mingxuan and Wang Junjie, which should be enough for a gold medal as maybe only South Korea can stand up to them, but even that is questionable. Overall, they are not a class above the B team of the Philippines, but they are clearly better, maybe even better by ten points and should win routinely. The Philippines simply don´t have their A team stars and no naturalized imports, so they are facing an uphill battle in this classic of Asian basketball, which should go China´s way.
The Philippines will definitely fight, especially because of the point difference as they will most likely progress from the group stage as one of the best third-ranked teams. They will still want to fight and will want to avoid a collapse against a superior Chinese team. It will be interesting, but in the end, Gilas should lose and probably close to around ten points as China are the better team.
We already talked about the problems and the decisions of the Filipino team. The lineup they have should have been supported by an import scorer, however, it didn´t happen. The result is a solid team for the Philippines, but we think they lack the quality to compete with a big team like China and are not one of the favourites for the gold medal even though they are the defending champions. They lack their main stars and with this lineup will be contending for bronze or maybe silver if possible. We doubt they can actually win the title and today´s matchup against China, whose team will most probably confirm the difference in class. The Philippines will certainly not go down without a fight, but in the end, they don´t have enough to contain the high-octane offense of China. It will still be an interesting match, but the Chinese should break away at some point, probably in the second half and claim a deserved victory as this is a showdown of the best players from the Chinese CBA league and the best of domestic contingent in the Filipino PBA league. CBA has better names currently and that should be decisive in today´s game.
If Gilas Pilipinas had their strongest domestic lineup with names like Kai Sotto, even without a naturalized player for them, it would still be a 50-50 contest. However, with their B team being involved in this tournament, they are at least 5-10 points below this star-studded and strong Chinese team that is easily winning games in this tournament.
China vs Philippines H2H
These two teams have a rich history of head-to-head duels with China winning six and the Philippines five times in their long 11-game head-to-head history.
Injuries and Suspensions
China are parading a very strong roster – basically, they are playing with their A selection without maybe two or three key names headlined by their NBA star Yang Hansen. However, they still have a very strong team that is the main favourite for the gold medal in our opinion. The Philippines are playing without a naturalized import player and with their B team with a couple of additions from their A selection.
Where to Watch China vs Philippines?
China vs Philippines Best Betting Tip and Prediction
On paper, it doesn´t look favourable for the Philippines, who have been disappointing in their opening loss to Bahrain. China seem clearly better at the moment and should take advantage of their combination of size and shooting to outwit the gritty Philippines. Head coach Tim Cone and the Philippines always have a chance, but with their current lineup, they are clearly inferior and we believe they will not prevent a loss, so the spread is simply too high for the Philippines as we believe they will not suffer a 23-point loss.
