They currently have a record of 41 wins and 26 losses, and they trail both the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics by two wins. It should also be noted that they have one game fewer than the Knicks, while they have one game more than the Celtics.

Right before this matchup the Cleveland Cavaliers recorded the mentioned victory against their next opponent. They secured a convincing win at the American Airlines Center with a score of 105-138. Considering the difference in quality, such a result is certainly not too surprising. The Dallas Mavericks entered the game as clear underdogs, and their hope of pulling off an upset did not last long. The Cleveland Cavaliers opened the game brutally on both ends of the floor and already after 12 minutes of play they had a 17 point lead. That difference only kept growing as the game progressed and in the end it was a massive +33 after four quarters of basketball. Evan Mobley was excellent, leading his team with 29 points and seven rebounds. Donovan Mitchell also played a great game with 24 points and eight assists, while James Harden added 17 points along with seven assists and seven rebounds.

The winning atmosphere in the Dallas Mavericks camp did not last long. It has been clear for quite some time that this team does not have the capacity to record good results consistently, which considering the plan for a reconstruction is not something that affects them too much. They managed to end a streak of eight consecutive losses against the Memphis Grizzlies, where they faced a weaker opponent and secured a 112-120 victory. The team from Texas is currently in 12th place in the Western Conference with a record of 22 wins and 45 losses. Ambitions of finishing among the top 10 teams have long disappeared, and the impression is that in their case losses and a lower position are currently valued more. From that perspective, the New Orleans Pelicans in 13th place have the same number of wins, but with one more game played.

In such a situation it was not realistic to expect any kind of comeback even against a much weaker team than the Cleveland Cavaliers, and to make matters worse they did not even manage to reduce the deficit, but instead almost doubled it. The only player ready to compete was Cooper Flagg, who finished as the top scorer with 25 points and five assists, once again confirming that he is the future of the franchise.
