Converge FiberXers vs Terrafirma Dyip Preview
We have been closely monitoring the FiberXers and could write whole essays about them. Last week, they were a hot subject in the PBA because they lost their fourth consecutive game against the San Miguel Beermen. Their four-game losing streak came after a three-game winning streak, when they were clicking on all cylinders. However, when they were winning at the start, they were playing inferior teams. When they had to face the big boys, their porous defense was completely exposed and not even their new import signing, Jamaal Franklin, could help them. The Converge FiberXers are currently dealing with numerous issues: they have one of the worst defenses in the conference and half of their coaching staff is missing. A couple of days ago, they made a desperation move by signing their third import in this Governors´ Cup as Cameron Clark has joined after finishing his short stint with Eastern in the Hong Kong Cup. However, he wasn´t the first choice to replace Franklin, who had excellent offensive numbers, but virtually played no defense. The main replacement for Franklin should have been Travin Thibodeaux, but he didn´t pass the measuring test as he was deemed over the PBA height limit. Clark did pass that test and will debut today against Terrafirma as the FiberXers are desperately looking to end their losing streak against Terrafirma, who are currently their main rivals for the final playoff position in the group.
Converge are switching imports left and right, but what they don´t realize is that no foreign player can currently help them. The reason for that is simple – their team is not playing defense and is simply relying on their offensive talent, which is at a very high level, but not enough to beat top PBA teams.
With a 3-4 W-L record, the Terrafirma Dyip are slowly and quietly building momentum. In the games they lost, they were very competitive and lost by narrow margins, while in their victories, they were superb as they recently managed to take down the shorthanded Tropa after overtime and then produced the biggest upset of the Governors´ Cup so far by beating the unbeaten NLEX Road Warriors. That win came out of nowhere and was completely unexpected because Jimmy Alapag and his Road Warriors were absolutely flying. The Dyip managed to subdue them and prevailed 114:109 with their import Justin Strings leading the way with a monster double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds. Regular starters and stars on their team, Juami Tiongson and Maverick Ahanmisi, combined for a total of 36 points, but the main X-factors in that victory were their role players Brent Paraiso and JM Bravo, who produced a total of 34 points. We already stated that Terrafirma are a very dangerous and unpredictable side that can´t be underestimated and can basically beat any team in the league when they have a good day. That is exactly what happened against NLEX, while today, they will be searching for another crucial victory against a team that narrowly beat them in mid-July.
The Dyip must be full of motives after taking down the only unbeaten squad in the conference. They have very solid quality and can even play strong defense when required, but today´s clash against the FiberXers will be decided by offense.
