Converge FiberXers vs Terrafirma Dyip Preview
When the legendary Vice Governor of Pampanga, Delta Pineda, took over Coverge in September last year, big improvement was expected. In the Philippine Cup, the FiberXers impressed and made it to the quarter-final, where they were defeated by the mighty Barangay Ginebra. However, in the Commissioner´s Cup, they failed to reach the postseason, so making the playoffs in this Governors´ Cup is the main goal. During the last Commissioner´s Cup, the FiberXers were struggling with injuries because their two stalwarts, Calvin Abueva and Juan Gomez de Liano, were out of the lineup for a big chunk of games. Now they are healthy, so Converge have the imperative to reach the playoffs and they showed their full power in the opener against the importless Titan Ultra Giant Risers, crushing them by 31 points. We like the FiberXers; not only because they are coached by a familiar face to us, but also because Delta Pineda has built the core of the squad around his stars from the legendary Pampanga Giant Lantern team from the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. In the 2024 draft, Converge selected Justine Baltazar as the number one pick (he was the best player in the MPBL, where he was virtually unstoppable and also featured for the Filipino national team in the previous FIBA window), while also bringing in Pampanga stars like Archie Concepcion, JL Clemente and Larry Muyang to complement veterans and steady scorers like Mikey Williams and Justine Arana. Of course, the main superstar is import Jalen Hudson, who is running the show (he had only twenty points against Titan, but he only played for 25 minutes and it was a blowout game).
We are expecting the FiberXers to make the playoffs, but they don´t have the quality and depth for a deep postseason push. Today, they are facing an interesting Terrafirma side with a clear goal of winning and setting the tone after demolishing the shorthanded Giant Risers.
On paper, the Terrafirma Dyip have a very capable and talented roster that should go toe-to-toe with the heavyweights and make the playoffs. However, the Dyip are still growing and maturing as a squad as they failed to clinch a playoff berth in the Commissioner´s Cup. Before the Governors´ Cup, they decided to make a trade with the San Miguel Beermen, sending the Beer Jerrick Ahanmisi and Paolo Hernadez in exchange for Juanmi Tiongson and Chris Miller. Jerrick´s brother Maverick Ahanmisi remained with Terrafirma and is one the main star scorers along with the center Geo Chiu. In their opener against the Titan Ultra Giant Risers, the Dyip showed great poise in the final canto and carved out a routine 113:100 victory, while against the NLEX Road Warriors, they were trailing by almost 25 points after three quarters, but almost managed to spearhead an improbable comeback led by Ahanmisi and Tiongson as they fell short by a single point in a dramatic ending. Their import Justin Strings has also been a key figure so far with an average of 21.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game, but he will be required to score even more if Terrafirma are to fight for the playoffs.
When we compare the rosters of Converge and Terrafirma, they are about equal with the FiberXers holding a slight edge. It is difficult to predict the winner today because both sides see this matchup as a very winnable affair, but what is certain is that we should witness an action-packed and entertaining match.
Converge FiberXers vs Terrafirma Dyip H2H
Last year in the PBA Philippine Cup with all-Filipino lineups, Converge hammered Terrafirma 125:108. A couple of months ago in the Commissioner´s Cup, the FiberXers were once again the better side and notched a routine 11-point victory.
Injuries and Suspensions
The Converge FiberXers could be without Alec Stockton, who didn´t feature in the opener against the Giant Risers, while the Terrafirma Dyip are expected to parade their full lineup.
