Dante Exum will miss the rest of the season due to injury, but it appears he may not remain a Dallas Mavericks player for much longer.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, as reported by Basket News, there are two possible scenarios ahead for Dante Exum and the Dallas Mavericks. With the former fifth overall pick earning $3.3 million this season, Dallas will either look to include his contract in a trade or waive Exum in order to free up a roster spot.
With the NBA trade deadline set for February 5, the Australian’s future should become clear by then. The team’s focus is on including him in a trade, likely as part of larger moves and roster reshaping that Dallas is planning (for example, Anthony Davis, who is reportedly on the way out).
The former Partizan player has not appeared in a single game this season, and following multiple surgeries, it is evident that he will be unable to help Jason Kidd’s team.
Despite ongoing injury issues last season as well — including a fractured hand that limited him to just 20 games — Exum averaged 8.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.
