After two months of negotiations and legal threats, the David DeJulius transfer saga has finally come to an end.
The American guard will play next season for Besiktas on loan from Murcia, before officially returning to the Spanish club in the summer of 2027.
Spanish side issued an official statement confirming the outcome of negotiations:
“Murcia wishes to announce that, following an agreement reached by all parties involved, the contract binding David DeJulius to the club has been ratified, with Murcia retaining its contractual rights over the player. Once this situation is resolved, the club reached an agreement with Besiktas for the loan of David DeJulius for one season, a deal for which Murcia will receive financial compensation.”

Disputed contract and the lawsuit
The entire transfer drama began at the end of last season. Following outstanding performances in a Murcia jersey during the spring, DeJulius signed a contract extension keeping him tied to the Spanish club until 2028. The agreement did not contain an exit clause for the summer of 2026, while a buy-out option was set to become active only in the summer of 2027.
However, his impressive displays caught the eye of EuroLeague suitors, leading Besiktas to officially announce in July that they had signed the American guard. Murcia reacted immediately by filing an official complaint against both the player and the Turkish team for a dual-contract violation. Even though DeJulius began pre-season training with Besiktas and appeared in friendly games, a serious legal threat hung over both the Turkish club and the player.
Court threat forces Besiktas into compromise
Facing a realistic danger that a Spanish court could mandate heavy financial compensation based on his valid contract with Murcia through 2028, Besiktas and David DeJulius’ agent were forced to rethink their position and reach a compromise with the Spanish side.
Ultimately, an agreement was reached for DeJulius to spend the upcoming season in Istanbul as a loan player. Besiktas will pay Murcia appropriate financial compensation for the one-year loan deal, while the player will return to Spain in the summer of 2027 to become a full-fledged member of Murcia once again. If Besiktas or any other European club wishes to retain or sign the American point guard in the summer of 2027, they will have to pay the official buy-out clause that takes effect at that time.
