De’Aaron Fox, a San Antonio Spurs player, spoke to the media after Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks.
The Spurs suffered a shocking and unbelievable loss. At the start of the second half, they had a 29-point lead over the Knicks, but then completely collapsed and were eventually defeated after OG Anunoby scored off an offensive rebound with 1.2 seconds remaining. It was also the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history.
De’Aaron Fox was arguably the biggest tragic figure for the Spurs. After securing a defensive rebound with 15 seconds left while leading 106–105, Fox pushed the ball in transition and thought he had an easy layup opportunity, but he was blocked by OG Anunoby. All he needed to do was run down the clock and avoid attacking the basket. He has now explained his decision.
“We haven’t scored. I tried to get a layup to get up three points. Make them force to need a three, and then OG Anunoby made a good block. I just thought I’d be able to outrun Anunoby. That’s it,” Fox said.
Overall, De’Aaron Fox had played a solid game up to that point. He scored 18 points, adding seven assists and five rebounds.
