Hapoel Tel Aviv head coach Dimitris Itoudis discussed several major topics surrounding European basketball, including the future of the EuroLeague, a possible return of Russian clubs, Zeljko Obradovic’s comeback to Panathinaikos, and the recent EHCB Coaches Congress.
Speaking on the “Instant Replay” show on Greek Basketball Federation WebRadio, Itoudis shared his vision for the future of European basketball and explained why he believes sports should remain separate from geopolitical issues.
Dimitris Itoudis wants Russian clubs back in EuroLeague
One of the biggest topics discussed was the potential return of Russian teams to European competitions after recent developments involving Russian athletes and international sports organizations.
Itoudis made it clear that he supports the idea of expanding the EuroLeague and believes the return of Russian clubs would benefit the competition.
“My dream is to have 30 teams in the EuroLeague, because the more clubs as possible, the better. I am in favor of the return of Russian teams.”
The Hapoel Tel Aviv coach emphasized that basketball should serve as a bridge between people and that athletes should not be affected by political situations.
“I am an ambassador of the idea that sports unite. Sports clubs have nothing to do with geopolitical matters, and neither do athletes.”
Itoudis also praised the recent efforts to bring Russian athletes closer to international competitions and expressed hope that the process continues.
“It is good that this effort is moving forward. Well done to the Olympic Committee. I hope this happens. The more teams as possible have big aspirations, the better for the fans.”
Itoudis praises Zeljko Obradovic’s Panathinaikos return
Itoudis also spoke about the return of Zeljko Obradovic to Panathinaikos, a move that created enormous excitement across European basketball.
The two coaches share a long history, as Itoudis worked as Obradovic’s assistant at Panathinaikos from 1999 until 2012, during one of the most successful eras in club basketball history.
According to Itoudis, Obradovic’s return was a major positive step for both the club and Greek basketball.
“First of all, for Panathinaikos it was a very good move, an amazing move, as well as for Zeljko. We talked about it. I was one of the first to congratulate him.”
Itoudis revealed that Obradovic showed him the renovated facilities at the Telekom Center Athens, explaining that he was impressed by the development of the club’s infrastructure.
“He took me to his new office, at the Telekom Center Athens, to show me how advanced things are now. I was very happy for him, but also for the development I saw.”
The Hapoel coach highlighted that Panathinaikos has improved not only the fan experience but also the areas used by players and coaching staff.
“What people see and visit in the stands is the same quality and even better in the VIP area, in the coaches’ offices and in the players’ locker rooms.”
Itoudis believes Obradovic’s motivation remains at the highest level despite his incredible career achievements.
“If he didn’t still have this flame, he wouldn’t continue working.”
Itoudis reflects on EHCB Coaches Congress
Another topic discussed was the recent EHCB Coaches Congress, where Itoudis was replaced as the former president of the EuroLeague Head Coaches Board by Xavi Pascual.
Itoudis expressed his gratitude to Panathinaikos president Dimitris Giannakopoulos and the club for hosting the event at Telekom Center Athens.
“I would like to say a very big ‘thank you’ for the use of the Telekom Center Athens and the deal we had over the last two years with Panathinaikos and Dimitris Giannakopoulos.”
He praised the renovated arena and described it as one of the best facilities in European basketball.
“It is a gem, one of the best arenas in Europe after its new refurbishment.”
Itoudis also explained how the venue helped create a better experience for coaches and participants.
“We made full use of the stadium, last year the glass floor, this year the large screens on the cube, with the participants always being very satisfied.”
