Donovan Mitchell has extended his commitment to the Cleveland Cavaliers by signing a new four-year maximum extension contract worth $273 million, which includes a player option for the 2030/31 season and a full trade kicker.
According to Shams Charania, Donovan Mitchell decided to sign the new contract on the first day he was eligible, even though he could have waited until next year to earn an additional $80 million.
The extension offers stability to the Cavaliers, who now know their star guard is locked in until the summer of 2030.
Mitchell, a seven-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA player, led his team to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018, and the first time without LeBron James since 1992. At the same time, this was a breakthrough for him as well, marking the first time in his career that he advanced past the second round of the playoffs.
After the Cleveland Cavaliers were swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, he was adamant that he loved being in Cleveland and wanted to remain there.

Core pieces locked in place
Donovan Mitchell arrived in Cleveland in 2022, and this season he finally managed to break through that invisible “second-round wall” in the playoffs. By extending his contract, he has committed to helping the Ohio franchise contend for an NBA championship for at least four more years. Most of the team’s other core pieces, like Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, are also locked into contracts, while rumors of potential moves in the coming days continue to circulate.
Cleveland Cavaliers ready to make the splash
James Harden arrived earlier this year from the Los Angeles Clippers in a trade for Darius Garland and provided a major boost to Donovan Mitchell, but he has since declined his $42.3 million player option. Still, the 2018 MVP is expected to re-sign, though likely only after a seismic shift occurs in free agency.
Specifically, LeBron James left the Los Angeles Lakers a few days ago and is now a free agent. According to numerous American media outlets, the Cleveland Cavaliers are among the frontrunners to land him, which would mark the beginning of a third stint in Ohio for one of the greatest players of all time. James’s return to Cleveland would drastically boost their title odds, especially if he gets the chance to share the floor with Harden and Mitchell.
