Basketball did not just lose a coach. It lost a system, a philosophy, and a man who showed generations what hard work, discipline, and belief in the process truly mean. Dusko Vujosevic was not just a coach on the sidelines, he was a teacher of life, a man whose words often carried more weight than the game itself.
His statements were not just phrases. They were messages. Lessons. Principles.
Legendary coach Dusko Vujosevic dies in Belgrade
In a time when everything is measured by results, Vujosevic believed in the process. In the idea that players are not bought, but created. And that is why today, more than ever, his words continue to resonate.
“There will be Partizan even when Dusko Vujosevic is no longer there…” – those words now carry a special weight, when he is no longer physically present.
What Vujosevic insisted on throughout his entire career is best reflected in one of his interviews that has become iconic, just like his status among Partizan fans, where one of the most successful coaches in Yugoslav basketball history has long been seen as a symbol.
“I am convinced that if things are done the way we did them, many things in Serbia can reach a European level. The following criteria are very important: it is possible to make a mistake when evaluating what kind of player someone is, or what kind of player he will become, but what must never be wrong is what kind of person someone is.
You need people who are ready not just to endure mistakes, but to correct someone else’s mistake. Even when the mistake is a bad shot selection or a moment of egoism, the essence is that the player does not complain, but sprints back and dives for the ball as if he made that mistake himself. That is when the machine starts.”

Philosophy of work and mentality
“Work, work and only work.”
“Talent is nothing without hard work.”
“There is no success without great sacrifice.”
“From home I carried what matters the most – to be ready and to move forward toward what is ahead. It is exactly as Hamlet says: ‘To be ready is everything.'”
Belief in the process
“If they are roses, they will bloom.”
“Victory is the result of work, not coincidence.”
“A loss must hurt, but it must also teach.”
Character and fight
“Only dead fish swim downstream.”
“Defense is a matter of character.”
“If you cannot play under pressure, you are not for Partizan.”
ZBOGOM DUŠKO.🕊️

Partizan as an ideology
“Partizan is not a club, Partizan is a way of life.”
“Whoever feels Partizan once, always comes back to it.”
“We do not buy players, we create them.”
“If our stadium is taken away, then we all go to the street and lose our home. I will defend it with dynamite and call all fans to join me!”
The greatness of Dusko Vujosevic as a coach is perhaps best illustrated by an anecdote from former Partizan and Crvena zvezda player, now sports director of the red-and-whites, Milan Dozet:
“Pionir was split into two parts by a large curtain at midcourt, and at that time I was in very good form. On the other side, Partizan had finished their practice, and I ran onto the court earlier than my teammates to do some shooting work.
As he was passing by, Dusko Vujosevic stopped and after a few seconds of watching, called me over briefly. He gave me advice about my shot, telling me I should bring my elbow much closer to my body on release, and he also corrected my foot positioning. I was speechless, and by listening to his advice I improved my shot even more.
To make it even more impressive, I played that derby very well and scored around 20 points. That shows the greatness of coach Vujosevic,” said Dozet.
If they are roses, they will bloom
Dusko Vujosevic did not leave behind only trophies. He left players. People. Characters. He taught them how to play basketball, but more importantly, how to live and how to behave off the court.
“I do not like when an athlete gets tattoos or drinks, because intelligence does not go with alcohol. You want to play sports but not live like an athlete. Then go out on the street… But those are my principles. I know it is not modern to be very straight.”
“I do not discipline players to punish them, but to teach them.”
And that is why his words will not disappear.
Because, as he once said:
“If they are roses, they will bloom.”
