Dwight Howard is heading to Europe for the first time in his career after joining Georgian club Black Fortress Tbilisi.
The 40-year-old former NBA superstar will join the Tbilisi-based team in October, adding another unexpected chapter to his career after several stops outside the NBA.
Dwight Howard announced the move on social media, confirming that he will now play in the country of Georgia – a fitting destination given that he was born in Atlanta, Georgia.
“Georgia, I’ll be on the way! Not my hometown, ATL, Georgia, but Tbilisi, Georgia! I saw all your flags in the comments on my last post and decided that’s where we have to take the tour next. Yes, I really look at the comments and make my decision based on who really wants me to come out and bring energy to their country.
So Superman is officially on the way! Y’all thought the vibes were high before? Just wait till October when we light up the floor with Black Fortress! Let’s make some noise, Georgia!” – Howard said.
Dwight Howard continues his career outside the NBA
Howard has not played in the NBA since appearing for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2022, but he has continued his professional career around the world.
The former No. 1 overall pick has played in Taiwan and Dubai and also competed in the BIG3 league in the United States.
Now, he will take his career to Georgia as he continues to play at 40 years old.
Howard remains one of the most accomplished centers of his generation. He was an eight-time NBA All-Star, a five-time All-NBA selection and a three-time Defensive Player of the Year.
He also led the NBA in rebounding five times and blocked shots twice before winning an NBA championship with the Lakers in 2020.
Howard had recently announced his retirement from basketball, but it appears that decision did not last long.
