This Saturday we are in for a massive clash in the Australian NBL1 – South playoff Grand Final as Eltham and Frankston will lock horns. We absolutely expected Eltham in this final after finishing as the runners-up in the regular season, but we definitely did not expect Frankston in the final. Still, it should be a very interesting and good game at a neutral venue in front of a packed State Basketball Centre. Led by one of the best point guards in the history of the top NBL tier Mitch McCarron, the Eltham Wildcats have been playing a level above everyone else this year. They surged through the regular season with a very strong 17-5 W-L record and then eliminated Dandenong and Nunawading on their way to this final. Their semifinal clash against the Spectres was a grueling affair as they gave away a double-digit lead and won after overtime. In that match, the Wildcats were without one of their most important starters, Brazilian import Leonardo Colimerio, but the rest of their team spearheaded by Harrison Hornery, American import TJ Weeks and one of the most improved domestic players this season Zak Cunningham, managed to get the job done. Colimerio is questionable today and his potential absence would be massive in a Grand Final because the Frankston Blues are in optimal form right now and will know how to exploit that absence. Still, even without their Brazilian scorer, Eltham have a good enough roster to win the title today in a game that is poised to go down to the wire.
These teams met during the early stages of the regular season when the Wildcats won easily at home 95:81. Both teams have different rosters now, especially the Blues, who are also in much better form compared to that encounter. The regular season head-to-head game doesn´t mean absolutely anything in a playoff final as these two teams are about evenly matched right now.
The Frankston Blues have been a very pleasant surprise for us in the second part of the regular season and the playoffs. Early on, they were exhibiting up and down form, but once American import Jeremy Combs reinforced their team, they started playing some exquisite basketball. Combs joined an already stacked Frankston unit with import Dibaji Walker and domestic scorers like Austin Shelley and Jack Stanwix, adding an average of 20 points and 8 rebounds per game. That kind of new production was crucial for Frankston as they went on a tear during June and July, knocking out the former champions Knox Raiders one of the best teams in the league, the Melbourne Tigers, on their way to this final. In the semifinal against Melbourne on the road, they were facing a double-digit deficit in the second half but completely turned things around in the final quarter. However, we have to add they won thanks to the help of the referees, who were blatantly on their side and completely robbed the Tigers and massacred the match with their questionable and lopsided calls.
If it wasn´t for the referee help, the Blues wouldn´t even be in this final. However, with their performances in the second part of the season, they deserve to be playing for the title. Today, they are facing one of the main juggernauts in the division but have a good chance since they are in excellent form and the Wildcats could be without one of their most important starters.
