Ettore Messina, who previously worked in the NBA as an assistant coach, has a deep understanding of the league’s mindset.
The head coach of Milano revealed that his acquaintances from the NBA are far from impressed with the EuroLeague’s competition system.
“They were shocked when they heard that we have the best competition in Europe, probably in the world outside of the NBA. That we have an incredibly long regular season—34 games is insane, just too much! And then, we have five games to determine who goes to the Final Four, and after that, just two games to decide the champion—it makes no sense! To them, it’s incomprehensible,” Ettore Messina said during an appearance on Edin Avdic’s podcast, “X&O.”
He further elaborated:
“If you tell someone in the NBA that the champion will be decided by a single elimination game, they’ll think you’re crazy! That they’d invest all that money for one game? What if the best player has a cold and misses the game?” Messina concluded.
The Italian coach highlighted the stark contrast in philosophies between the two basketball systems, emphasizing the challenges posed by EuroLeague’s unique structure.
