EuroLeague is preparing for one of the biggest format changes in recent years. The current 20-team round-robin system, in which every team plays every opponent twice, is expected to remain in place for just one more season, with the 2026-27 campaign set to be the final one under the current structure.
Milano general manager Christos Stavropoulos revealed the plans during an appearance on EOK’s WEB Radio. According to Stavropoulos, EuroLeague has decided to keep the current format for one additional season before introducing a significantly different system.
“We have made the decision with 20 teams and the round-robin system for one year. However, this year we renewed it for another year, but this will definitely be the last” Stavropoulos said, confirming that the 2026/27 season is expected to be the last with the current format.
Starting with the 2027/28 season, EuroLeague is planning to expand the number of participating teams and introduce conferences. As a result, clubs would no longer face every opponent twice during the regular season, with the schedule instead determined in part by the new conference structure.
“Starting next year (2027/28), we will have an increase in teams, and the system will be different; it will be with conferences,” Stavropoulos explained.
The planned changes could significantly reshape the competition, bringing more teams into EuroLeague while creating a completely different regular-season schedule. Stavropoulos stressed that maintaining the quality of the competition remains a priority, describing EuroLeague as “the most important European competition” with “enormous quality.”
TRANSFERS & MOVES: Olympiacos officially signs Mbaye Ndiaye from Asvel
Olympiacos have officially signed Mbaye Ndiaye, with the Senegalese forward joining the Greek powerhouse on a two-year contract after leaving Asvel. The move adds another athletic and defensively versatile piece to Olympiacos’ roster ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Ndiaye’s departure from Asvel comes as a surprise, particularly because the French club had only recently extended his contract. The 27-year-old signed a three-year extension on July 8 that was expected to keep him in Villeurbanne through the end of the 2028-29 season. However, interest from several clubs quickly changed the situation, with Olympiacos ultimately securing his services.
The Senegalese forward spent the previous three seasons with Asvel after joining the club from ADA Blois in 2023. He enjoyed the most productive EuroLeague campaign of his career in 2025-26, averaging 7.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.4 blocks per game across 32 appearances. He also posted 9.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.2 blocks in 26 LNB Pro A games.
Ndiaye established himself as an important two-way contributor thanks to his combination of size, athleticism and defensive activity. His ability to impact the game around the basket, protect the rim and contribute without needing a high offensive usage made him an attractive option for Olympiacos.
His transfer also represents another significant departure from Asvel during a turbulent offseason. Ndiaye had initially been expected to remain part of the club’s plans for the 2026-27 campaign, but the recent contract extension ultimately lasted only a matter of weeks. Olympiacos have now moved quickly to take advantage of the situation, signing Ndiaye through 2028.

Partizan are close to signing a new player from the United States, with Ethan Thompson reportedly nearing a move to Belgrade. According to reports from Nova.rs and Meridian Sport, the Puerto Rican guard is in advanced talks with the Serbian club over a potential move.
Thompson spent the 2025-26 season with the Indiana Pacers after entering the NBA following his college career at Oregon State. He appeared in 32 games during his first NBA season, averaging 7.0 points per game. His potential move to Partizan would mark his first experience in European basketball.
According to the aforementioned reports, Thompson and Partizan are expected to agree on a two-year contract, although only the first season would be fully guaranteed. If the deal is completed, Partizan would add another player with recent NBA and G League experience to their roster.
Thompson would also become another example of an American player making the move from the NBA and G League to Europe. The 26-year-old brings versatility and athleticism to the backcourt, while his experience at the highest level of basketball could make him an intriguing addition to Partizan.

Anadolu Efes are entering a new era after a major offseason rebuild, and general manager Alper Yilmaz believes the Istanbul club is building a completely new identity. Speaking about the team’s plans, Yilmaz emphasized that the focus is on creating a roster capable of representing Efes at the highest level.
“We are building a new Anadolu Efes. We need a group of players who will represent Efes in the best possible way on the court. That is what we are doing,” Yilmaz said.
The club has made significant changes this summer following the departure of Shane Larkin, who left Anadolu Efes after several successful seasons and joined city rivals Fenerbahce.
