The first few rounds can often be crucial for the outcome of the entire season. It is extremely important to generate profit in credits at the start of the season.
Therefore, we have analyzed the schedules of all 20 teams for the first five rounds and highlighted the teams whose players could be particularly interesting, as well as those whose players should be approached with caution.
Anadolu Efes
Home games: Real Madrid (2), Bayern (5)
Away games: Barcelona (1), Crvena Zvezda (3), Olympiacos (4)
Anadolu Efes have a rather unfavorable schedule in the first four rounds. Pablo Laso’s team will travel to face Barcelona, Crvena Zvezda and Olympiacos, while also hosting Real Madrid. It is only in Round 5 that they will be clear favorites, when they face Bayern at home. Our advice is to avoid Anadolu Efes players in the first four rounds.
Milano
Home games: Virtus (2), Real Madrid (5)
Away games: Partizan (1), Baskonia (3), Maccabi Tel Aviv (4)
Milano have a very mixed schedule. They will play their first four games against teams from the weaker half of the EuroLeague. They will travel to face Partizan, Baskonia and Maccabi Tel Aviv, while Round 2 brings an Italian derby against Virtus. Most of these games are expected to feature a high number of points and fairly close results, so some Milano options are worth considering.
Besiktas
Home games: Valencia (1), Barcelona (3)
Away games: Maccabi Tel Aviv (2), Baskonia (4), Hapoel Tel Aviv (5)
Besiktas, the EuroLeague returnees led by Dusan Alimpijevic, will host last season’s surprise package, Valencia, in Round 1. They will then travel to Maccabi Tel Aviv, host Barcelona, and travel to Baskonia. In Round 5, they will once again travel to face Hapoel Tel Aviv. Overall, they have a very mixed schedule, and Besiktas players are not a good long-term option at the start of the season.
Crvena Zvezda
Home games: Zalgiris (1), Hapoel Tel Aviv (2), Anadolu Efes (3)
Away games: Dubai (4), Asvel (5)
Crvena Zvezda, led by new head coach Ibon Navarro, will play their first three games at home, against Zalgiris, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Anadolu Efes. They will then have two away games against Dubai and Asvel. Most of these games are expected to be physical, lower-scoring contests, so we would not recommend Crvena Zvezda players in the opening rounds.
Dubai
Home games: Real Madrid (1), Barcelona (2), Crvena Zvezda (4)
Away games: Fenerbahce (3), Baskonia (5)
Dubai will host two Spanish giants in the opening two rounds, Real Madrid and Barcelona. They will then travel to Fenerbahce before hosting Crvena Zvezda. In Round 5, they will travel to Vitoria for what could be a very highscoring game for all fantasy fans. Avoiding Dubai players at the start of the season would also be advisable, especially because of the large number of new players and the uncertainty surrounding their roles.
Barcelona
Home games: Anadolu Efes (1), Zalgiris (4), Maccabi Tel Aviv (5)
Away games: Dubai (2), Besiktas (3)
Barcelona will have a solid schedule over the first five rounds. They will first host Anadolu Efes, followed by away games against Dubai and Besiktas. In Rounds 4 and 5, they will host Zalgiris and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Most of these games are expected to remain competitive until the very end and will be played against direct rivals in the middle of the standings. Therefore, it is worth considering some options from this team.
Bayern
Home games: Partizan (3), Virtus (4)
Away games: Hapoel Tel Aviv (1), Fenerbahce (2), Anadolu Efes (5)
Anton Gavel’s team will most likely start the season 0-2 after away games against Hapoel Tel Aviv and Fenerbahce. After that, they will have two easier home games against Partizan and Virtus, giving them a chance to make up for a difficult start. In Round 5, they will travel to Anadolu Efes. Bayern players should be seriously considered for Rounds 3 and 4.
Fenerbahce
Home games: Virtus (1), Bayern (2), Dubai (3), Zalgiris (5)
Away games: Panathinaikos (4)
Fenerbahce will play four of their first five games at home. In the opening three rounds, they will host Virtus, Bayern and Dubai. This gives them an ideal opportunity to make a strong start to the season. They will then face their toughest away game against Panathinaikos before hosting Zalgiris in Round 5. Similar to Dubai, Fenerbahce have brought in a large number of new players, so it may be worth waiting to see how Sarunas Jasikevicius distributes the roles.
Hapoel Tel Aviv
Home games: Bayern (1), Real Madrid (3), Besiktas (5)
Away games: Crvena Zvezda (2), Valencia (4)
Hapoel Tel Aviv are another team with a very mixed schedule, so the players from their team should be picked up carefully. They will host Bayern in Round 1, travel to face Crvena Zvezda, and then host Real Madrid. In Round 4, they will travel to face their major rival Valencia before hosting the newcomers, Besiktas, in Round 5.
Baskonia
Home games: Olympiacos (1), Milano (3), Besiktas (4), Dubai (5)
Away games: Valencia (2)
Baskonia put together a rather modest roster over the summer, but they are still likely to play at a high pace and in high-scoring games this season. Therefore, their games should be followed closely from a fantasy perspective. They will have a slightly tougher start to the season, facing Olympiacos and Valencia in the first two rounds. After that, they will have three consecutive home games where they will look for opportunities to pick up some wins, making players from their team viable from Round 3 onwards. They will host Milano, Besiktas and Dubai, in that order.
Asvel
Home games: Maccabi Tel Aviv (1), Valencia (3), Crvena Zvezda (5)
Away games: Panathinaikos (2), Paris (4)
Asvel, with new head coach Tony Parker, will look to move away from the bottom of the EuroLeague standings. In Round 2, they face the toughest possible away game, traveling to Athens to play Panathinaikos. In their other four games, they can be competitive, facing Maccabi Tel Aviv, Valencia and Crvena Zvezda at home, as well as Paris on the road. Some Asvel options are worth considering, especially since most of their players are relatively cheap.
Maccabi Tel Aviv
Home games: Besiktas (2), Milano (4)
Away games: Asvel (1), Panathinaikos (3), Barcelona (5)
Similar to Asvel, Maccabi Tel Aviv can be competitive in most of their games apart from the trip to Panathinaikos. They will host Besiktas and Milano, while also traveling to Asvel and Barcelona. Maccabi traditionally play at a high pace and in high-scoring games, so their games should be closely monitored from a fantasy perspective.
Olympiacos
Home games: Anadolu Efes (4)
Away games: Baskonia (1), Zalgiris (2), Virtus (3), Valencia (5)
The defending champions, Olympiacos, will begin their title defense in the always-difficult Vitoria where they will face Baskonia. After that, they will travel to Zalgiris, Virtus and Valencia, teams that are generally very strong at home. In Round 4, they will host Anadolu Efes. Most of these games will be against tough home teams, so there is no need to rush into selecting Olympiacos players. With one exception, of course: the master of fantasy points, Sasha Vezenkov.
Panathinaikos
Home games: Paris (1), Asvel (2), Maccabi Tel Aviv (3), Fenerbahce (4)
Away games: Partizan (5)
The most expensive team in EuroLeague history also has the most favorable schedule to start the season. As many as 7 of their first 8 games will be played at home. In the first four rounds, they will host Paris, Asvel, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Fenerbahce. They will then travel to face Partizan. Zeljko Obradovic is an excellent fantasy coach option, as three wins are expected in the first three rounds. The other Panathinaikos players should also be considered.
Paris
Home games: Partizan (2), Zalgiris (3), Asvel (4), Virtus (5)
Away games: Panathinaikos (1)
Paris will travel to Panathinaikos in Round 1 before playing four consecutive home games. They will host Partizan, Zalgiris, Asvel and Virtus, in that order. Paris will have a chance in most of these games, making their options viable after Round 1 is finished. Just like in previous seasons, they are expected to play at the fastest pace in the EuroLeague, so their games should be followed with particular attention.
Partizan
Home games: Milano (1), Panathinaikos (5)
Away games: Paris (2), Bayern (3), Real Madrid (4)
Partizan will enter the season with significantly lower ambitions than in previous years. They have a fairly favorable schedule in the first three rounds and a good opportunity to make a strong start to the season, making some players from their teams viable for the first three games. They will host Milano before traveling to Paris and Bayern. After that, they face two extremely difficult games: a trip to Real Madrid and Zeljko Obradovic’s emotional return to Belgrade following last season’s split.
Real Madrid
Home games: Partizan (4)
Away games: Dubai (1), Anadolu Efes (2), Hapoel Tel Aviv (3), Milano (5)
Real Madrid will play four of their first five games on the road. In the first three rounds, they will travel to Dubai, Efes and Hapoel Tel Aviv. They will then host Partizan before traveling to Milano. They brought in a large number of players over the summer, so it is worth waiting before selecting Real Madrid players due to the uncertainty surrounding the distribution of roles.
Valencia
Home games: Baskonia (2), Hapoel Tel Aviv (4), Olympiacos (5)
Away games: Besiktas (1), Asvel (3)
Last season’s surprise package, Valencia, will once again try to work a little magic this season. They have a very favorable schedule over the first three rounds, facing Besiktas, Baskonia and Asvel. They will be slight favorites in all three games. After that, they will have two tricky home games against Hapoel Tel Aviv and Olympiacos. Like Baskonia and Paris, Valencia are also expected to be involved in high-scoring games this season. For the first three games, players from Valencia are viable options, but after that they will face tougher opponents, making it easier to skip picking them up.
Virtus
Home games: Olympiacos (3)
Away games: Fenerbahce (1), Milano (2), Bayern (4), Paris (5)
Virtus have perhaps the toughest schedule at the beginning of the EuroLeague season. They will play four of their first five games on the road, against Fenerbahce, Milano, Bayern and Paris. Their only home game will be against last season’s champions, Olympiacos. It’s best to skip their players, since they will not be favorites in almost all of these games, and there is some uncertainty over distribution of roles.
Zalgiris
Home games: Olympiacos (2)
Away games: Crvena Zvezda (1), Paris (3), Barcelona (4), Fenerbahce (5)
Zalgiris are another team with an extremely difficult schedule to start the season. They will also play four of their first five games away from home. They will travel to face Crvena Zvezda, Paris, Barcelona and Fenerbahce. Their only home game will be against the defending champions, Olympiacos. Choosing to not pick up some of their players right out of the gates looks like right choice.
