Gran Canaria’s defeat in the final round of the Endesa League regular season left the team in a position that resulted in relegation from the competition.
Three teams were involved in the battle to avoid relegation: Gran Canaria, Zaragoza, and Andorra.
Zaragoza secured survival thanks to an incredible game-winning basket at the buzzer, while Gran Canaria was relegated after a heavy defeat to Valencia.
Following the result, the club released an official statement apologizing to its supporters:
“Tonight, the club’s relegation has been confirmed, and this is an extremely painful moment for all of us. We know exactly what this means to you. We understand the anger, sadness, and disappointment felt by everyone who never leaves the team alone in the Arena every weekend, who follows it both at home and away, and by all those who consider this badge a part of their lives.
We have not lived up to the standards that this club represents. First and foremost, we want to apologize to all of you. Many decisions were wrong, and we take responsibility for them. We know that every season-ticket holder and every supporter represents far more than someone simply filling a seat in the Arena.
There is hope, passion, memories, and a sense of belonging that goes beyond sporting results. That is why this blow hurts so much. Today is a day to acknowledge the pain, learn from what has happened, and begin the rebuilding process.
We are fully committed to taking all the necessary steps starting today to return this team to where it belongs. We will dedicate every available resource and every effort to make that happen as quickly as possible. A press conference will be held next Monday.
