Gran Canaria suffered a heavy 105–81 defeat on the road against Valencia in the final round of the Liga Endesa regular season, a result that sealed their relegation from Spain’s top basketball division.
Gran Canaria trailed from the opening tip and struggled throughout the contest, particularly on the defensive end. Their task was made even more difficult by the fact that Valencia was still fighting for the best possible playoff position heading into the postseason.
The team coached by Pedro Martinez flirted with a double-digit lead in the opening quarter and fully established control before halftime. Valencia’s advantage reached as many as 21 points, making the outcome appear all but decided, especially with the EuroLeague side playing at their characteristic high tempo and offensive rhythm.
Valencia continued to dictate the pace throughout the second half, never allowing Gran Canaria a route back into the game. The home side remained firmly in control until the final buzzer, handing their opponents another costly defeat.
Omari Moore led Valencia with 21 points, while Brancou Badio added 18. For the losing side, Nicolas Brussino scored 16 points and Chimezie Metu contributed 15.
This was Gran Canaria’s first relegation in over three decades, with a season that got progressively worse, especially after the firing of head coach Jaka Lakovic and a poor display in the FIBA Champions League.
