Greece has done an excellent job at this EuroBasket, finishing first in a very tough Group C alongside Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Spain, and Georgia. That gave them an easier path in the knockout stage, where they first eliminated Israel in the Round of 16 and then defeated Lithuania 76:76 in the quarterfinals. With that victory, they reached the semifinals of the European Championship for the first time in 16 years, guaranteeing themselves a chance to fight for a medal, whether in the final or the third-place game.
Giannis Antetokounmpo has been the true leader of the team throughout the tournament, even sitting out some games to rest. He is averaging 30 points per game, and against Lithuania in the quarterfinals, he scored 29, including crucial free throws down the stretch when Lithuania tried to cut the deficit. Another key contributor in that game was Vassilis Toliopoulos, who scored 17 points in just 16 minutes on 6-of-8 shooting, compensating for Greece’s poor three-point shooting as a team. Greece has yet to deliver a perfect game in this tournament, which makes their potential even more intriguing. Dinos Mitoglou shot 2-of-7, Kostas Sloukas 3-of-7, and Tyler Dorsey just 1-of-6, and still the team managed to reach the semifinals. Clearly, their outside shooting needs to improve. On the defensive end, Kostas Antetokounmpo was outstanding in the first half against Lithuania with four blocks, coming close to the EuroBasket record of six.
Turkey entered EuroBasket as something of an underdog, seen as a team capable of pulling off a surprise. Their first “final” came in the group stage when they defeated Serbia, earning themselves an easier path to the semifinals as well. They beat Sweden in the Round of 16 with some struggles, and then controlled their quarterfinal matchup against Poland, winning 91:77. This marks their first chance to fight for a medal at a major tournament since 2010. Their best EuroBasket result came in 2001, when they won silver. Both medals mentioned came when Turkey was the host nation, but this time, they are not.
Alperen Sengun once again showed how much he has matured as a player, carrying this Turkish team on his shoulders. He became the youngest player in EuroBasket history, and only the fifth ever, to record a triple-double. Against Poland, he finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. He had already come close in the group stage against the Czech Republic, when he was just one assist short. Cedi Osman suffered an injury when Mateusz Ponitka fell on his leg, but according to his own words, he has enough time to recover and will be ready for the semifinals. Shane Larkin did not have his best shooting night but still provided stability and filled up the stat sheet, while Ercan Osmani can certainly perform better than his 4-of-11 shooting against Poland. So far, Turkey’s best game was against Serbia, when they shot an incredible 18-of-31 from beyond the arc. They may need a similar performance, combined with strong team defense, to succeed in the semifinals.
