Hamburg vs Heidelberg – Preview & Prediction (Mar. 13, 2026)  

Hamburg missed a big chance to make a stronger step toward survival. In the last five games they recorded only one win, which came as a surprise road victory against Alba Berlin. They are currently at 7-13 and are still fighting to avoid relegation. It should also be noted that they have three games fewer than most of their direct rivals. After a very good run at the start of the year and several roster changes, the team was slowed down by injuries that disrupted their rhythm. The absence of Zacharie Perrin has had a particularly big impact. He was the most consistent player, contributing on both ends of the floor. In recent games Hamburg has struggled badly with three point shooting, hitting only 25 percent, which is clearly not good enough. They have the fourth worst offensive rating in the league and their defense has also declined. One positive aspect of their play is strong offensive rebounding.

Martin Breunig has been improving as the season progresses. The experienced player has raised his level and brought stability and points to the team, although the results have not fully followed. The turnaround of the season began when Devon Daniels and Ross Williams joined him in the roster. Daniels has been very consistent and is the team’s top scorer this season, while Williams has recently struggled and has failed to reach double digits in six straight games. On the other hand, Kenneth Ogbe has recovered from injury and improved his physical condition, which immediately had a positive impact on his performance. Karl Gamble was brought in to replace Perrin, but he is a player with weaker defensive abilities.

On the other side, Heidelberg managed to surprise Trier on the road and record their sixth win of the season, improving their chances in the fight to stay in the league. They probably played their best defensive game, completely slowing down the fastest team in the league and holding them to only 69 points. They did an excellent job defending the three point line, allowing only two made shots out of 25 attempts. They also applied strong pressure on the ball and forced 24 turnovers, which they punished effectively. Great defense compensated for a large deficit in rebounding, where they had 16 fewer boards. New head coach Carlo Finetti recorded his first win, which should boost the team’s confidence, especially because they managed to withstand the opponent’s comeback attempts. Heidelberg currently has the worst offensive rating in the league.

It is very important for Heidelberg that their key players are recovering and improving their form. The team has limited depth in the rotation, so whenever one player is not performing at the expected level it immediately becomes a problem. Ryan Mikesell was again the top scorer in the last game with 18 points, although he is not a major threat from three point range. Michael Weathers had been dealing with an injury but still played and delivered a strong performance, just like DJ Horne, who is the team’s leading scorer this season. However, it is clear that the injury has affected him and his minutes are slightly reduced. Heidelberg also struggles a lot with rebounding, especially on the defensive end, where Marcel Kessen and Osun Osunniyi often get into foul trouble and also struggle against more athletic opposing centers.
