Panathinaikos head coach Ergin Ataman has been fined €10,000 by EuroLeague Basketball for actions that led to an “abnormal interruption” during his team’s victory over Alba Berlin.
The incident occurred early in the fourth quarter, with Panathinaikos trailing 66-71. As Alba attempted a transition play, Ergin Ataman stepped onto the court, leading to a technical foul being assessed against him.
The moment was later described as a “turning point” in the game by Alba head coach Pedro Calles.
According to EuroLeague’s official statement:
“Ergin Ataman, head coach of Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens, has been sanctioned with a fine of €10,000 for actions that caused the abnormal interruption of a game on occasion of its home game against ALBA Berlin under 27.2.a) of the Euroleague Basketball Disciplinary Code. The decision may be appealed before the Appeals Judge.”
Ataman’s actions added to his reputation as one of the most passionate and outspoken coaches in European basketball. While he has the right to appeal the fine, it remains to be seen whether Panathinaikos will challenge the ruling.
