Iceland vs Turkey Preview
Iceland made a very good impression through the first three quarters of their game against Serbia in Belgrade, but they ran out of steam in the final ten minutes and eventually suffered a convincing 102-73 defeat. They struggled on the glass and had major problems protecting the rim, as Serbia grabbed 25 offensive rebounds, while Iceland collected just 27 rebounds in total. Their three-point shooting was also a major issue, as they made just two of 17 attempts from beyond the arc. The backcourt duo led Iceland offensively, with Elvar Fridriksson scoring 19 points and experienced guard Martin Hermannsson adding 18. Big man Tryggvi Hlinason finished with 14 points, but had to spend as many as 35 minutes on the floor. It is clear that the Nordic team’s biggest strength is their continuity. Whether they are playing in the qualifiers or at a major tournament, Iceland tend to rely on virtually the same roster. They know each other extremely well, are highly cohesive and well-drilled, and there is no doubt that this is their biggest advantage. Iceland now have a 3-4 record, and a win over Turkey is a must if they want to keep their hopes of making a historic World Cup appearance alive. Their wins over Italy and Lithuania in the first round of the qualifiers give them some reason to believe that an upset is possible.
Turkey, meanwhile, continued their outstanding run and remained perfect in the qualifiers. Ergin Ataman’s team picked up their seventh win, this time cruising past Lithuania 94-66. After the opening quarter ended 27-13 in Turkey’s favor, it was already clear which way the game was heading. The Turks shot an excellent 50% from the field and also dished out 21 assists. With their first star Alperen Sengun unavailable, Omer Yurtseven dominated in the paint, finishing the game with 17 points. The leading scorer was new PAOK player Cedi Osman, who recorded 22 points and six rebounds in just over 20 minutes on the floor. Ataman managed the rotation well and preserved his team’s legs ahead of the trip to Reykjavik. Malachi Flynn, who is representing Turkey as their naturalized player in this window, did not have his best outing, finishing with eight points. However, his relatively modest contribution was hardly felt, as Turkey comfortably took care of an undermanned Lithuania and cruised to another convincing victory.
Iceland vs Turkey H2H
These two teams have met four times so far, with Turkey winning on three occasions. However, their most recent matchup went Iceland’s way, as they defeated Turkey 83-71 at home last year in the EuroBasket qualifiers.
Injuries and Suspensions
Alperen Sengun is sitting out the August window in agreement with the head coach, just like new Dallas Mavericks player Tarik Biberovic. Shane Larkin is also not part of the squad, while Malachi Flynn has taken the spot as Turkey’s naturalized player in this window. Ercan Osmani suffered a nose injury during the first quarter of the game against Lithuania, and his availability for the trip to Iceland is now in question. Iceland head coach Craig Pedersen has no injury or roster concerns.
Where to Watch Iceland vs Turkey?
Iceland vs Turkey Best Betting Tip and Prediction
Iceland were more or less an even matchup for Serbia through the first three quarters of their game. Now, they will be highly motivated to get back on the winning track in front of their home fans. Turkey, on the other hand, are still unbeaten and well on course to secure their place at the World Cup. Even a defeat in this game would not hurt them too much in the bigger picture. We expect Iceland to put together a strong performance, compete hard and ultimately avoid losing by more than the posted spread.
