Iran vs Bahrain Preview
The quarterfinal matchup between a weakened Iran and reinforced Bahrain is where we see a potential upset and surprise on the cards. As always, Iran are fielding a very strong and experienced roster led by veterans like Jamshidi and Kazemi. They are led by one of the best coaches in Asia, Greek expert Sotirios Manolopoulos, and are expected to fight for a medal, but we think they will come up short and could even suffer a surprising defeat today. Despite having a very good roster, Iran are without their main stars like Mohammed Amini and Sina Vahedi, who are needed to win a medal at this competition. Because of these absences, the Iranian team is relying on low-scoring defensive matches as they can grind out virtually any team in Asia, but Bahrain will be a very difficult matchup for them. In the group stage, alarm bells were ringing when Iran lost their opener to a limited Qatari side (59:53), but they made amends and silenced the critics with two victories over Chinese Taipei and Jordan. This Wednesday, they are facing an extremely unpredictable and reinforced Bahrain team that has historically always been a class below them but with Bahrain´s new reinforcements, today´s game is a historic opportunity for their team to beat their big rivals.
Gritty defense and a strong system go a long way in basketball, but we doubt those things will be enough for Iran to win a medal. They should win today, but when they meet juggernauts like Japan, China and South Korea, their chances are extremely limited. Overall, we expect their shorthanded team to experience problems today as Bahrain are no pushovers with Sampson and Thomas. This should be a very interesting match, maybe even the most fascinating contest of the quarterfinals as we are expecting a very tight and dramatic affair.
With their new-look roster, we consider Bahrain to be the main dark horses in these Asian Games. For many years, they were a below average side in Asian basketball, but after foreign head coach Slobodan Subotić took over the reins, they are now at a much higher level. Bahrain are a real exception in this tournament as they are the only team with a total of four naturalized players. They are led by the former NBA talent JaKarr Sampson, who is absolutely dominating and is supported by former NCAA scorer Elijah Thomas. In addition, Bahrain also have the athletic Kelechi Ajukwa and Uroš Ilić, so they look very formidable on paper. During the group stage, they opened their campaign with a massive statement victory over the Philippines (89:85) but were then brough back down to Earth by a superior Chinese team that totally blew them out by 46 points. In order to progress to the knockout stage, Bahrain simply needed a win over Kazakhstan in the final round and they showed great poise by dismantling the limited Kazakh side 101:78. Overall, Bahrain´s team has never been this strong and if there was ever a time for a famous upset win over one of the Asian heavyweights Iran, then that time is today.
With the unstoppable JaKarr Sampson, Bahrain are a force to be reckoned with. They are not at the level of top favourites like China and South Korea, but they are definitely close and could even fight for a medal if they produce an upset today and have a good draw for the semifinal.
Iran vs Bahrain H2H
Historically, Iran have never lost a game to Bahrain as they managed to win all three of the head-to-head encounters.
Injuries and Suspensions
Iran have brought a very strong and experienced roster to the Asian Games but are missing their main stars Mohammed Amini and Sina Vahedi. Bahrain have their strongest roster in history with all of their main domestic stars and four naturalized import players.
Where to Watch Iran vs Bahrain?
Iran vs Bahrain Best Betting Tip and Prediction
Following their victory over the Philippines, Bahrain have proven they have what it takes to seriously compete at this level. Iran are shorthanded but still boast a strong roster and should be the favourites today. The right way to go is to back the Bahrain spread because the Bahraini side is well-coached and has undeniable foreign quality in their roster that should make today´s clash very intriguing.
