Joventut vs Valencia Preview
Joventut, generally speaking, have not had a particularly successful season. The impression is that they especially underperformed on the European stage, in the FIBA Champions League. This season’s Final Four was held in their city and in their arena, yet they were not part of the tournament. They were eliminated in the quarterfinal series by eventual finalist AEK Athens. As for the Copa del Rey, a competition that always carries special importance in Spain, they were knocked out in the quarterfinals by Valencia, their opponent in this series.
When it comes to the Liga Endesa, however, they looked much better and more consistent throughout the season. They finished the regular season in sixth place with a record of 22 wins and 12 losses. That meant they would not have home-court advantage in the quarterfinal series, where they faced Baskonia. The series did not start well for them, as they suffered a routine defeat on the road in Game 1. Nevertheless, they managed to regroup after that loss, first recording a convincing home victory and then delivering an excellent performance in Vitoria, where they secured a comfortable 96-88 win and eliminated the favored opponent. The task became significantly more difficult in the semifinals. The feeling is that Joventut missed a golden opportunity in Game 1 to steal home-court advantage and complicate the series. They squandered what was practically a won game and eventually lost 118-117 after overtime. In Game 2, Valencia played with far greater focus, while the visitors from Badalona failed to establish any offensive rhythm. A clear indication of Joventut’s struggles was the fact that they never held a lead at any point during the game. The visitors lacked productive contributors, with Jabari Parker being the only player to score in double figures, finishing with 16 points. It should also be noted that Joventut have played the second half of the season without Ante Tomic, who is unquestionably one of the team’s most important players, and his absence has been a major handicap for the squad coached by Daniel Miret.
On the other hand, Valencia have enjoyed a dream season. From the very beginning, it looked as though this could be a highly successful campaign for the club. Valencia opened the season by winning the Spanish Super Cup, defeating Unicaja and then Real Madrid to lift the trophy. However, their biggest surprise came in the EuroLeague. Expectations were not particularly high for Valencia entering the season, yet they managed to reach the Final Four. Their quarterfinal series was especially impressive. After losing the first two games at home, they responded by winning three consecutive contests, including two on the road, to eliminate the much more expensive Panathinaikos squad, which had been considered the main title favorite before the season began.
As for the Endesa League, it should be noted that after Real Madrid’s elimination in the quarterfinals, Valencia became the leading favorite to win the championship. So far, they have performed accordingly. They had no trouble sweeping Bilbao 2-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, they faced Joventut, and it was clear that the challenge would be considerably tougher. Valencia had to work extremely hard in Game 1 to secure the victory. In the end, thanks to Jean Montero, Kameron Taylor, and Jaime Pradilla, they managed to take the series lead, although they also benefited from several costly lapses in concentration by Joventut late in the game. Everything was much easier for Valencia in Game 2. They effectively decided the outcome in the opening quarter, which they won 30-13. They imposed their rhythm on both ends of the floor, and it became evident that Joventut simply did not have enough resources to match them. Valencia then comfortably maintained their advantage, never allowing the visitors to even think about a comeback, and eventually recorded a convincing 90-76 victory. The standout performer in the win was Brancou Badio with 16 points. Alvaro Cardenas also delivered an excellent performance, scoring 13 points despite generally having a limited role throughout the season. In addition, Jean Montero contributed 11 points, while Sergio De Larrea, Jaime Pradilla, and Kameron Taylor each added 10. It is clear that if Valencia can replicate such a performance, they will be very close to securing a place in the final.
