NBA star Karl-Anthony Towns expressed his enthusiasm after the Dominican Republic’s historic win over the USA team a few days ago in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
Although he couldn’t play due to NBA commitments, the New York Knicks center praised his teammates for the country’s first victory over the Americans since 1989:
“I made myself scream at home” Towns said in the locker room after the Knicks’ win over Toronto on Tuesday.
“I’m overjoyed. Excited like any Dominican. We’re proud of our people. Yes, I would have been part of that team and to see them, obviously, I can’t be a part of it now. I’m playing, doing my job here.”
Karl-Anthony Towns was born and raised in Edison, New Jersey, and his Dominican heritage comes from his mother, Jacqueline Cruz.
Although Towns doesn’t speak Spanish, he has represented the Dominican Republic internationally since 2012. His most recent game for the national team was at the 2023 World Cup, where he reached the second round.
