Panathinaikos stepped on the gas after halftime, scoring 67 points in the second half and securing a comfortable 106-89 victory over Adelaide.
While Kendrick Nunn struggled early, Rischaun Holmes showed great potential, and Dimitris Rogavopoulos ignited the team’s offense.
The game started in Sydney much like Panathinaikos’ previous match in Melbourne against Partizan. The team appeared slow and disconnected, struggling to score from beyond the arc. As a result, the lead slipped into Adelaide’s hands, with the Greek side relying heavily on Kendrick Nunn, who scored all 7 of his team’s initial points, keeping the score at 7-15.
Then, coach Ergin Ataman made tactical adjustments, bringing Rischaun Holmes onto the court. The big man quickly developed effective offensive chemistry with Kostas Sloukas, helping Panathinaikos close the first quarter at 17-19.
The second quarter, however, remained problematic for the Greek team, both offensively and defensively. Bryce Cotton “went wild” in the first half, posting 19 points on 3/6 two-pointers, 2/4 three-pointers, and 7/8 free throws. Meanwhile, Vasiljevic contributed 14 points with 4/5 from downtown.
Panathinaikos finished the first half shooting just 10/28 on two-pointers and 4/12 from three-point range, totaling 14/34 overall, with 7/10 free throws. Adelaide, after a slow start of 0/5, reached an 11-point lead at 36-45, shooting 11/22 on two-pointers, 6/11 from three, and 7/13 on free throws.
The third quarter marked a turning point, with Panathinaikos unleashing a highly effective fast break. The team outscored Adelaide 34-21 in the period. Kendrick Nunn shined, but Rischaun Holmes and Dimitris Rogavopoulos became the standout performers for Ataman. Holmes dominated in the paint with 14 points and 7 rebounds, including 6 offensive boards, while Rogavopoulos added 11 points and 8 rebounds, giving Panathinaikos a 73-68 lead.
In the final quarter, the gap widened to double digits at 81-68 by the 33rd minute, showcasing Panathinaikos’ counterattack efficiency. Kendrick Nunn was unstoppable, lifting his teammates, and the team finished with six players scoring at least 10 points each.
