Klay Thompson has already set himself an ambitious goal ahead of his first season with the Miami Heat.
The 36-year-old sharpshooter wants to become the player with the most three-pointers made in a single season in franchise history.
The current record belongs to Duncan Robinson, who made 270 three-pointers during the 2019-20 season, shooting an impressive 44.6 percent from beyond the arc.
Robinson broke Wayne Ellington’s previous record of 227 made threes that year.
Thompson came close last season
Thompson’s numbers from his final season with the Dallas Mavericks suggest that Robinson’s record could be within reach.
He appeared in 69 games, averaging 21.7 minutes, 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
Despite his limited playing time, Thompson shot 38.3 percent from three-point range and made 202 three-pointers over the course of the season.
That leaves him 68 made threes short of Robinson’s record.
If Thompson plays a similar number of games in Miami, he would need to increase his three-point production to roughly four made threes per game to reach the 270 mark.
Can Klay break the record?
Much will depend on Thompson’s role and playing time in Miami.
The veteran remains one of the league’s most reliable high-volume shooters, and the Heat will expect him to provide consistent floor spacing and perimeter scoring.
If he receives enough opportunities from beyond the arc, Thompson could have a realistic chance of breaking Robinson’s record in his first season with the franchise.
For a player whose greatest strength has always been his shooting, it would be an appropriate way to begin his Miami chapter.
