LeBron James has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he plans to leave the franchise after eight seasons. The decision marks the end of an era for Lakers’ modern championship core.
According to Shams Charania, the Los Angeles Lakers wanted to retain LeBron James, but the 41-year-old has expressed a desire to seek his future elsewhere.
At the same time, he wanted to inform them of his decision in advance out of gratitude for his time with the franchise and to give them enough time to prepare for the offseason.
LeBron James arrived in Los Angeles in 2018, and just two years later he led the Lakers to their 17th NBA championship, which remains their most recent title.
One of the best ever played 60 regular-season games, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists, and was also the main driving force in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs, when the Lakers eliminated the Houston Rockets.
Following this decision, the legendary franchise can now fully focus on building around Luka Doncic, with the first move expected to be re-signing Austin Reaves, which is reportedly already agreed.
