Italy head coach Luca Banchi spoke about his expectations for the upcoming FIBA World Cup Qualifiers matchups, as well as his decision not to take over a club team this summer, even though his contract with the Italian Federation allows it.
This summer, Luca Banchi was rumored to potentially take over the bench of a EuroLeague club. However, that ultimately did not materialize, despite his contract with the Italian Basketball Federation permitting it, and he has now explained the reasoning behind his decision.
“My contract with the Federation gives me this option, but I believe there is room to successfully continue the work we started in my first season as national team head coach”, he pointed out.
Luca Banchi and his squad performed remarkably well in the first round of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers, finishing with a 5-1 record. In the second round, they were paired with a group featuring Turkey, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, whom they will face in the battle to qualify for the tournament.
The Italy head coach highlighted his expectations ahead of the upcoming games against Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, their direct rivals in the race for a spot in the 2027 FIBA World Cup.
“We find ourselves in a favorable position in the standings, but we know that everything can easily get complicated again. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia are strong opponents. All national teams will have their best players available. The level of basketball will be very high”, said Luca Banchi to Corriere dello Sport.
The Italy head coach also touched upon the impact of Italian players, as well as the need to give them more opportunities at the club level.
“The season confirmed that Italian players know how to respond in the right way when given trust and responsibility. I don’t think we need restrictive rules to force clubs to give opportunities to Italian players. We need to convince owners, executives, and coaches that our players, when given the proper chance, can bring quality and competitiveness, along with a very strong sense of belonging”, he concluded.
