Mackay Meteors vs Sunshine Coast Phoenix Preview
As a legendary side from the old Queensland Basketball League (the predecessor of the NBL1 – North), the Mackay Meteors are expected to perform and achieve high-quality results every single season. Last year, they had a very formidable roster, but they were eliminated by the Southern District Spartans in the playoff quarter final. This season, they didn´t start off well because they were missing key pieces early on and also there was no chemistry in their lineup since they were constantly rotating and bringing in new players. Their main signing Derek Emelifeonwu was injured for a big chunk of this season, while the new imports Jalen Johnson and Maurice Calloo joined midseason. These three players are the main driving force of Mackay when they are on the floor and are supported by the local legend, American import Jerron Jamerson, who has been with Mackay for many years and even won some titles. Jamerson is actually their head coach on the floor and the main floor general as he is the extended arm of the head coach Angus Henskens. Other standouts on their roster are Cameron Goldfinch and Kobey Sager, who provide the necessary scoring punch needed to compete in an electric and high-scoring league like the NBL1 – North.
Despite a poor start, the hosts are currently sitting in comfortable fifth place in the standings and have already locked in a playoff berth. They are also in very solid form as they have won their last four out of five matches, which means they will be more than a worthy opponent this Sunday against the star-studded Sunshine Coast.
As expected, the Sunshine Coast Phoenix are enjoying a very solid campaign as they are currently in fourth place in the standings, having already secured a playoff spot. The main problem of the Phoenix has always been their leaky defense, while offensively, they are one of the most talented squads in the division. They tried to improve on the defensive end this season, but they simply can´t get out of their high-scoring mindset and very fast tempo. During their five-game winning streak in May and early June, they were conceding an average of just over 80 points per game, but recently, they have faltered defensively – they won against the Spartans, but gave away 95 points, while against the Brisbane Capitals, they gave up 99 points, which cost them the match. Also, they have been playing shorthanded in the last couple of weeks, but almost all of those missing pieces are now back with the exception of Jamaal Robateau, who is nursing an injury and is questionable for today´s clash. Import Earnest Ross will be back for this round after representing Guam in the Asian qualifiers for the World Cup and his presence will give the guests an extra scoring option, which will be necessary against the high-scoring pace of the Meteors.
It is difficult to predict the winner of this match because these two teams are about equal; maybe the Phoenix are just slightly better. Mackay are not as strong as in the previous seasons, but they are still an excellent team with home court advantage, so it will be intriguing to see who secures the upper hand in this clash.
