Meralco Bolts vs Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Preview
The Meralco Bolts have had a rough time so far in the Governors´ Cup as they currently sit at the bottom of their group with a 2-5 W-L record. Everything went wrong for the Bolts immediately in their opening match as they were forced to play without their import Jordon Varnado, who suffered a minor injury. Without Varnado and his familiarity with the roster and tactical schemes, all of the preparations of Meralco were ruined. The management quickly tapped Antonio Hester as his temporary replacement – Hester has been playing well, but the Bolts have been mostly losing games and currently find themselves on a four-game losing streak. The main problem besides Varnado´s injury, have been injuries of their domestic stars like Jason Brickman and CJ Cansino, who both missed a couple of games. They returned in the clash against Magnolia a week ago, but couldn´t help their team as Meralco suffered a horrible 105:88 loss. For today´s clash, the Bolts have decided to activate their first-choice import Jordon Varnado, who is set to make his Governors´ Cup debut against Ginebra. The Gin Kings already beat Meralco around two weeks ago routinely by nine points, but the Bolts were playing without Brickman and Cansino in that match. Today, with the triple-headed monster of Varnado, Brickman and Cansino, the Bolts have a reason to be optimistic, but it will be very tough for them to end their losing streak against one of the best teams in the country.
Today´s clash has very serious playoff implications. If the Bolts lose, they will be in a very deep hole, while if the Kings lose, they will also find themselves in an uncomfortable position. This means that today´s match is a must-win for both of these teams, so we should witness a very tight and close affair.
Led by one of the best coaches in the country and the Filipino national team head coach Tim Cone, the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel are always a menace regardless of their injury situation and the roster they are fielding. Throughout this initial Governors´ Cup stage, Ginebra have been struggling because they are without their legendary scorer Justin Brownlee along with their first-choice point guard Scottie Thompson. With these absences, the Kings lose a lot of their offensive firepower and have been forced to play gritty defense in order to win. Brownlee´s temporary replacement, Riley Grigsby, has been playing at a very high level, but the domestic contingent led by RJ Abarrientos has been inconsistent. As a result, Ginebra currently find themselves outside the playoff zone in fifth place in their group with a 2-3 W-L record. Most recently, they lost the Manila Clasico by 15 points to Magnolia and only managed to beat Blackwater and the shorthanded Bolts so far. Other teams took advantage of their absences and also the fact that they are stagnating offensively. Ginebra´s triangle offense had to make a major switch without the scoring prowess of Brownlee and that has cost them. Today, the Kings will be facing a reinvigorated Bolts side with Cansino and Brickman along with the debut of Varnado, so there could be an upset on the cards this Friday.
Even with Meralco busting out their import Varnado and with Cansino and Brickman back in the lineup, Barangay Ginebra should still be small favourites. The Gin Kings have enough quality and depth to win today, but it will be hard as this game should turn into a real grudge match that will be decided by one to two possessions.
