The Meralco Bolts had to go through a lot of adversity at the start of the Governors´ Cup, so they can be more than satisfied with their current 1-1 W-L record. After getting eliminated in the Commissioner´s Cup playoff semifinal by TNT, they had high hopes for this conference because they retained their domestic core led by their captain Chris Newsome and added import Jordon Varnado, who is very familiar with the team and Meralco´s playbook after playing for the Bolts in the Asia Champions League. In their opener, the Bolts were expected to routinely take down the Phoenix Fuelmasters, but to everyone´s surprise, their import Varnado was nowhere to be seen. The team management explained afterwards that he is dealing with a slight injury and will miss the opening stages of the Governors´ Cup as Meralco lost to the Fuelmasters in a dramatic ending by single point (98:97). Head coach Luigi Trillo and his coaching staff had to react and temporarily brought in a proven veteran presence in view of import Antonio Hester, who arrived to the Philippines last week and immediately bolstered the Bolts as they used his 21 points and 9 rebounds to take down the heavily shorthanded Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in a wild match that produced more than 230 points.
Hester is more than familiar with the PBA and has instantly produced against Rain or Shine. He received excellent support from Jason Brickman and Chris Newsome as the Bolts clawed their way back from a double-digit deficit from the first half and subdued the Elasto Painters by eight points. Today, they are taking on a very awkward Blackwater side, but they should be able to extinguish Bossing´s excellent form and notch their second win in the conference.
The Blackwater Bossing have been the most pleasant surprise of the Governors´ Cup so far. They are currently standing at a flawless 2-0 W-L record in what their head coach Pat Aquino deemed to be the “Group of Death”. Blackwater opened their account with an emphatic and surprising 131:108 victory over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Many thought that victory was a fluke because it was the opening match and the Elasto Painters were missing several key pieces, but the Bossing proved everybody wrong with their superb 89:81 victory over the Magnolia Hotshots. The main cornerstone of Blakwater´s early success has been their import Kentrell Barkley, who is looking like an old school PBA import. He notched a massive triple-double against Rain or Shine, while against Magnolia he once again dominated with a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds. He is receiving the most support from RK Ilagan, who is finally fully fit, and Sedrick Barefield, who is playing well and is reportedly seeking a new contract of up to one million pesos monthly. Blackwater´s management and board obviously don´t think he is worth that much, so he could potentially leave the club soon.
The Bossing have always been one of the weakest PBA franchises, so their flawless start surprised everyone. If they win today, they will tie their franchise-best start, but that will be very difficult since they are taking on the most demanding opponent so far. The Elasto Painters were decimated by injuries, while the Hotshots are currently not at a very high level, so the Bossing could be in for a reality check this Tuesday against the much better organized Bolts.
