Milano general manager Christos Stavropoulos discussed Alec Peters’ move from Olympiacos while confirming that the EuroLeague’s current 20-team round-robin format will be used for one final season.
Speaking to EOK’s WEB Radio, Stavropoulos also backed reigning EuroLeague champions Olympiacos to remain among the competition’s top teams and explained what Alec Peters can bring to Milano.

Alec Peters begins new chapter after joining Milano from Olympiacos
Peters joined Milano after several successful seasons with Olympiacos, where he became an important part of the team’s rotation and experienced several deep EuroLeague runs.
Stavropoulos explained that bringing the American forward to Milano was a clear basketball decision rather than a last-minute development.
“It was already a settled story that Alec Peters would come to the team. It was a basketball choice. He experienced incredible moments with Olympiacos, and I believe that by coming here he wants to bring a new breath to his career.”
Milano aiming to build on historic domestic season
Milano enters the new campaign after completing a historic domestic treble in Italy. The Italian powerhouse won the Super Cup, Italian Cup and Serie A championship for the first time in club history, giving the team a perfect domestic season.
Stavropoulos believes the challenge now is to replicate that success domestically while taking another step forward in the EuroLeague.
“I have to say that we finished a very good season for the club, because for the first time in history we won all three titles in Italy, the Super Cup, the Cup and the Championship. So for us it was a very important year.
What we want is next year to repeat a similar run domestically, but also to do better in the EuroLeague. We built a fairly balanced team, according to the needs of the EuroLeague, with depth. As long as we stay healthy, we will respond to the demands of the season. We are quite optimistic about that.”
Milano GM backs EuroLeague champions Olympiacos to challenge again
Stavropoulos also praised Olympiacos for their remarkable consistency at the highest level of European basketball. The Greek club has been a regular presence at the EuroLeague Final Four in recent years, culminating in a championship-winning campaign last season.
“Olympiacos has been present at all the Final Fours in recent years. From our own experience, it is very difficult even to make the playoffs. What Olympiacos has achieved is an incredible accomplishment. The Final Four, however, is a different situation. It is about how you find yourself on those specific days.
I believe they deserved to win it, because they had a very consistent season, with great quality. And the team they have built for next year is definitely for the top positions.”
EuroLeague set for major format change after 20-team era
The 2026-27 season will be the final one under the EuroLeague’s current 20-team round-robin system, according to Stavropoulos. The Milano general manager explained that the format was initially introduced for one season before being extended, but confirmed that the competition is expected to move to a different structure after the upcoming campaign.
“The decision we made with the 20 teams and the round-robin system was made for one year. However, this year we renewed it for another one, but this will definitely be the last one. From next year we will have an increase in the number of teams and the system will be different, it will be with conferences.
With this system, some teams will not play twice against everyone, but, okay, you lose something and you gain something. The EuroLeague is the most important European competition, with tremendous quality.”
