General manager of Milano, Christos Stavropoulos, commented on the team’s season, the departure of Nikola Mirotic, and the arena change due to the Winter Olympic Games.
Milano has had a very unsuccessful season, in which they failed to win a single trophy, and in every competition—except the Italian Cup—they were far from being competitive.
“We made mistakes. Josh Nebo comes to mind, whom we waited for after his first injury, and when the second one happened, maybe it was already too late and there was no solution that convinced us. In general, we don’t want to bring in players just for the sake of it. We tried to make up for it. I don’t want to name players who performed below expectations, but sometimes it happens that things don’t work out.
What we did wrong will be part of the baggage of mistakes we aim not to repeat. But we must not forget that we are the same people who won three consecutive championships. And we are already working to build a team that will be competitive in the EuroLeague playoffs and fight again for the domestic title,” said Christos Stavropoulos, before speaking about Nikola Mirotic’s departure.
“Some time ago, he informed us of his desire to take a different path. He had the style and kindness to inform the ownership as well. Obviously, we are sorry. He gave everything until the end, proved to be a great champion and a true professional. We can only wish him the best of luck.”
The general manager also revealed that Olimpia Milano will have to temporarily move out of their home arena due to the upcoming Winter Olympic Games.
“It will be a special season because, as you know, we will have to leave the Unipol Forum for three months, from December 15 to March 15. Still, Milan-Cortina and the Forum itself have shown great collaboration to allow us to continue using it as a venue and training facility.
There will clearly be a financial impact, as we will go from an arena that holds over 12,000 spectators to the Allianz Cloud, which seats less than half. But in the club’s 90th anniversary year, playing in the former Palalido is a coincidence that makes us happy—also because it’s a beautiful venue.”
