Milano vs Reggiana Preview
Milano’s EuroLeague squad opened its Serie A playoff campaign in the right fashion. In the first game of the series, on home court, they comfortably handled Reggiana. Milano controlled the entire flow of the contest and secured a 96-84 victory. It was also Milano’s third win in as many meetings against Reggiana this season, as well as their fourth victory in the last five games for the team coached by Peppe Poeta.
Milano entered the opening game of the series with a very serious, focused and motivated approach. They immediately found their rhythm, as evidenced by the 31 points scored in the first quarter alone. Milano had several players in strong form, but Shavon Shields stood out early and finished the game as the team’s leading scorer with 19 points. Reggiana had no answers for Milano’s offense throughout the first half, during which the home side scored 57 points and built a game-high advantage of 22 points on two separate occasions. Reggiana showed better offensive execution in the second half, but Milano remained composed and focused, easily resisting every push from the visitors. Leandro Bolmaro and Ousmane Diop played particularly important roles during those stretches, combining for 24 points, while Zach LeDay added 13 points, Marko Guduric contributed 12 points and six assists, and Josh Nebo posted nine points and ten rebounds. Milano also features the Serie A MVP this season, Armoni Brooks, who has been mentioned as a potential Partizan signing for next season. However, those rumors may have slightly affected the outstanding guard’s focus, as he scored a modest seven points by his standards in Game 1. There is no doubt that Milano still has another gear available, giving them every reason to believe they can deliver another quality performance on home court. In the opener, they shot only 27% from three-point range, which is another area where significant improvement can be expected.
From almost the opening tip, Reggiana never truly had a say in the first game of the series. The difference in quality was fully evident, leaving Dimitris Priftis’ team with little reason for major regret. The Greek coach attempted to surprise the hosts by opening the game in a zone defense, but that strategy did not trouble Milano at all. On the contrary, Milano scored 31 points in the opening ten minutes, making Dimitris Priftis’ tactical approach look highly ineffective.
Reggiana still managed to put together several positive stretches during the game. Late in the second quarter, they went on an 11-2 run that allowed them to head into halftime trailing by a manageable 14 points. During that stretch, center Jaime Echenique and guard Riccardo Rossato provided an important spark. Alongside them, Reggiana had two more double-digit scorers in Jaylen Barford with 21 points and Troy Caupain with 20, both of whom helped cut the deficit to single digits on several occasions in the second half. Still, Reggiana could not get any closer than that. Their defense was far too soft against Milano’s penetration game, allowing the hosts to shoot an outstanding 74% from two-point range. Reggiana was also outrebounded by seven boards and finished the game with just 14 assists. Another major issue was the disparity in free throws, as Milano attempted twice as many as Reggiana, 30 to 15. That reflected poor foul discipline from the visitors as well as a lack of aggressiveness offensively. Reggiana is clearly missing injured guard Stephen Brown. There had been optimism about his return after he played a few minutes in the final regular season round, but he did not appear in Game 1. Without him, all offensive creation and playmaking responsibilities fall on Troy Caupain and Jaylen Barford, who combined for only four assists in the opening matchup.
Milano vs Reggiana H2H
In the opening game of the playoff series, Milano comfortably defeated Reggiana at home by a score of 96-84. During the regular season, Milano also came out on top in both meetings against Reggiana.
Injuries and Suspensions
Milano will be without Stefano Tonut and Devin Booker, while the visitors are missing Stephen Brown and Kwan Cheatham.
Where to Watch Milano vs Reggiana?
Milano vs Reggiana Best Betting Tip and Prediction
Milano delivered an inspired and efficient performance in Game 1, while the visitors paid the price for a very poor start and the 31 points allowed in the opening quarter. There is no doubt that experienced coach Dimitris Priftis has taken certain lessons from that matchup and will prepare his team much better for the second game of the series. Reggiana can hardly perform worse defensively than they did in the previous game, and offensively they still possess enough quality to present themselves in a far better light and challenge the favored opponent. We believe that will be the case and that Reggiana will avoid losing by a margin greater than the listed handicap.
